As far as knowing if Joseph ever lied.....well.....no can really know that for sure....all humans have told a lie.....no matter how hard they strive to do good and right.....I am sure for one thing.....Joseph Smith would not lie about the things God told him to say and do....He was a fourteen year old boy who saw a vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ his son.....and was severely persecuted for testifying of this.....do you think he would have fought so hard to bring forth Gods Work.....if it was a lie?
now for your question.....about Eden....we believe that Heavenly Father has created many worlds patterned after this one....if we had a garden of Eden....well maybe those other worlds did too......so maybe your answer is both....

Eden is referred to in the Book of Genesis as being in the area of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. Present day Iraq. Joseph Smith put it in Missouri. Only missed by about 7000 miles.

Joseph Smith may have said things that were not true. When he simply mispelled a man's name, he was denounced for it. The man joined a mob against him.
What he said as revelation as we have it in Doctrine and Covenants was and is true, because he was the mouth for the word of the Lord. Not every revelation came to pass because some were conditional upon the what people were required to do.
As far as I can tell Eden was on this planet.

He was clever enough to manipulate the most basic men's instict to his advantage. That is to procreate, with multiple wives, if necessary.
The garden of Eden can be anywhere you want. It represent hope for humanity. Some want to believe it is a real physical place, just like some who choose to believe Santa is real person in North Pole

The answer to your question is the Bible, which you as a Mormon say you believe.
It says not one word, or letter can be added to His Word. Anyone who does it is condemned already.
So Joseph Smiths additions are all lies.
Check it out!

No I totally think he really needed magic goggles to read because he was only 15 when he found the golden tablets about the truth of Mormonism.

Everything he said was fabricated in his mind. That's great if people truly benefit from being a Mormon, but I hope that at the very least they understand that Mr. Smith was never able to prove any of his tales....
