i know that you only have to be 18 to take the test but do you have to be a certain age? im asking for fdny. thankz

You could be hired at 18 but most agencies prefer that you are 21.

To apply to take the next New York City Firefighter Exam, you must:

Be between the ages of 17 and a half and 29.


To be hired as a New York City Firefighter, you must:

Pass both the written and physical exams;
Pass a medical exam and background investigation;
Be at least 21 years of age; You must have reached your 21st birthday to be eligible for appointment.

Be a U.S. citizen;
Have at least 15 college semester credits earned as a result of satisfactory completion of course work at a college or university accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Council for Higher Education or full time military service with an honorable discharge; or 6 months of full time, satisfactory paid work experience;
Hold a motor vehicle driver's license valid in New York State;
Be a resident of one of the five boroughs of New York City, or live in Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk or Westchester County;
Be a Certified First Responder with Defibrillation (CFR-D)*.
* All Probationary Firefighters are required to be a CFR-D. First-year Firefighters who lack this certification will be provided with training at their own expense. For more information, about CFR-D courses, call REMSCO at (212) 870-2301 or NYS Department of Health (518) 402-0996.

I think it starts w/ being 18 and going on from there. I do believe there are reasonably set age limits; who at 55 wants to start off as a "newbie" fire fighter?

Be assurred recruits are closely looked at in areas of skill, strength and speed. And those testing recruits ask "Is this guy or gal really strong enough for this job?"
