I'm trying to reinstall it after having Linux on it. It shuts down when it gets to the setup files being copied, it shuts down. What can I do? I've tried several times

stopped at 38%, and it's a Dell Inspiron 1000 if that matters

well I can't use a dell recovery CD because I don't have one. I'm using a generic Windows XP disk. Also it's Home Edition.

I wish i could help but here is a guess maybe its the fact that u dont have enouhg memory??????/ Oh and by the way CUTE avatar!!!!!!!!

Do you mean you are using the Dell Recovery disks or a generic XP Installation CD? You MUST use the Dell disks.

Please re-post with specific details. Then we can help.

You can go to Maxtor.com and download "PowerMax 4.23" to a floppy disc. Then insert the floppy disc into you pc when you start or re-boot. Follow the instructions and it will erase ALL or your hard drive and you can re-install Windows or another system like Linux.
WARNING: This will erase everything on your hard drive, so use it only if you do not want to save anything on it.

did you delete all the partitions and make a new partition on the drive and format in ntfs before trying to go on with the install
