If you would like a pure breed dog you might look into a basenji (I think I spelled it correctly). It is a medium sized dog that does not bark..........a real plus in an apartment. They are short haired and have a good temperment.
But.......you can't beat the pound and a mixed breed for a good dog with the added benefit of saving a life of a loyal friend!

You might want to check out this website: www.dogbreedinfo.com. This website is great because it gives so much information on different breeds, as well as tips and articles to help you find a good dog that fits your lifestyle. When you get to the site, click on the link on top "find the perfect dog" and then scroll through the pages. I reccomend that you take the dog breed selector quiz on the site. Look through your answers, discard the ones that you don't think will fit with your lifestylye, and then research your remaining choices. Talk to owners of the breed, breeders, and look up as much information as you can. This is VERY VERY important, because research is key. Once you know the breed, then you can choose to get a puppy from a breeder, or rescue. If you want a puppy from a breeder, make sure that you find a responsible breeder that can answer your questions and has good facilities. The only way to know this is to visit the facilities themselves, and make your own judgements. If you want to rescue, you should try www.petfinder.com. This is also an amazing website! Please highly consider adopting , because there are so many wonderful dogs of all ages that are just waiting for a second chance.
Hope this helps, and remember to research!!!

It is really up to you on what you get. There are hundreds of dog breeds that fit what you are looking for. I own a Miniature Schnauzer and we go on hour walks and we also compete in agility. Schnauzers are very vocal so if you choose on a Schnauzer you better want to get a chain so he can go chase squirrels and birds! They love to exercise. Mine was a little overweight for a while so I started to take him on long walks and he just loved them! He attacks me when I say the walk word.
There are three kinds or Schnauzers; Miniature, Standard, and Giant. Miniatures have very long legs and are about 14'' at the shoulder. Standards are like a larger version or the Miniature. They are about 16'' at the shoulder and aren't very common. Miniatures and Giants are probably more popular. Giants are huge. Probably about 2 ft. at the shoulder. They mainly come in black and are used for service dogs.
Well I hope this helps. Pick what fits you though. Do some more research. If you want to consider the Schnauzer you can e-mail me at razzy_horse@yahoo.com for more info on them!
~Good Luck on you Doggie search!

labs and goldens are great dogs, but they are large breeds. they are very smart and train easily and will be thrilled with an hour of exercise daily! but, a puppy will not be able to do this with you for quite some time. if you are looking for an instant exercise partner, you might want to look into adopting an older lab or golden from a local shelter or contact either breeds rescue in your area. i am sure you would find a wonderful dog that will be glad for the new home and someone who loves him/her to take her out for plenty of exercise. good luck.

Any dog can be an apartment dog as long as they are given the right amount of exercise. You'd probably do well with something from the working or sporting group if you're looking to take it biking and roller blading. Possibly a labrador retriever or a golden retriever.

Check out a Whippet. Kind of in between the Greyhound and the Italian Greyhound
They are excellent in the house and they love to get out and run. They are medium sized, short haired, mild-mannered and lots of fun.

Rescue a mix breed- most of them haven't had a long run in an open park in longer than they can remember.

I recommend Boston Terriers. They are very quiet and very lovable. They are also very lovable and love to play. Shedding is not to bad as they are shot haired. The only down side is they snore a little.
