I have given food to people on the street many times. Most of the time, I will talk to them to see what they need first. Some of them are just looking for a hand out, or money to buy beer. Some are not. You never know until you talk with them and pray about it.
On the other side of the coin, I left my husband three years ago. He was very abusive and my daughter and I lived in my car for two weeks before they had room at a shelter and we got back on our feet. I am eternally grateful for those who helped me, but especially helped my daughter. One woman went into Wal Mart and bought my daughter a stuffed bear. It was the best thing for her at the time. She still had that bear and sleeps with it every night, and prays about the woman who gave it to her.

They really want money. They would hold up a sign with an picture of an elephant if they found that it resulted in more donations. That wording usually works and so they use it. Are you qualified to judge? I'm not.
Usually they can get public assistance for food. Plus if you don't eat much you have to be careful about how much and what you eat or you will get sick.
I give them money because I have a little extra and they asked and they need it.

you know? there are two guys that stand by the freeway with signs that say "Hard times, please help".
Now I have been pondering this for days, what good would it do if I gave them a meal. First of all, they will just be hungry again, and still need another meal. If I give them money, I really think they will just buy alcohol or drugs.
Even if they did'n't buy booze or drugs, how is giving them money going to get them past hard times?
Seems to me, they think that an acceptable solution for hard times, is to sit on their rears, and wait all day for handouts.
The Bible makes it clear, that this mentality is not to be encouraged.
2 Thes. 3:10 In fact, also, when we were with YOU, we used to give YOU this order: “If anyone does not want to work, neither let him eat."
Besides, in the US, there are plenty of programs that hand out money to the lazy, and these jerks are probably collecting that too.

Yeah Im a sucker for beggers sometimes . I usually buy them a burger and fries. Most of them just want money but dont want to work like the rest of us. They are pretty easy to spot, usually not too dirty and not hung over and they always have a small backpack stuffed with newspaper to make them look homeless . Most are not homeless. There is one guy who owns his own home( a nice home in the suburbs) who begs at the mall here in town. He rides his bike to the bus, hops the bus to the mall, gets out, hides his bike, and begs. he makes about 200 a day, Thats much more than I make. He thinks he is getting away with this huge lie . He is not . He will have to answer to God for it some day. As far as the "will work"sign holders I would bring them home and put a shovel in their hands, but they rarely come. Bunch of phonies. They are just looking for suckers like me. But I would rather give to a few phonies then to chance passing up a person truly in need . Thats why I am a sucker for beggers.

I usually see those guys while I'm working, and I drive for a living. I keep my lunch in the car with me, so if I think a guy's really hungry I'll give him some of my lunch.
Giving money to most homelesss people is a very bad idea because it's their misplaced priorities that made most of them homeless in the first place.

yes, i have helped many people on the street / homeless, fed many, went and bought them something, or brought them home and fed them, i have taken people / hitchhikers to places they needed to go - or at least as far as the next town, found where someone's car broke down and went down the road and found them walking, so i took them where they were headed,
i have done many such things, but i always pray first and see if God wants me to do it, if i get a feeling like - its ok go ahead and help , then i do, ; also i have many times gotten the feeling NO stay away or you will be in trouble, so i don't help, but i do pray that God have a cop or some one take care of the situation.
because we do have to be careful, not all is exactly what it seems,

I don't, because I give in other ways, but my mom keeps a paper sack in the car with some stuff in it and gives it to them. Usually a pack of crackers, a can of tuna fish or something like that, a can of fruit and a bottle of juice.
Most take it gladly, thankful for something to eat and drink on a hot day ... but a few times they've thrown it back at her.

I actually bought a sandwich and a bottle of cold water for a young man. He was angry when he looked in the bag, he wanted money instead.
