Why is it that pigs and cows get slaughtered, but dogs and cats get put to sleep?

Well, pigs and cows get slaughtered to feed the public. Actually, some people eat dogs in other countries, and they are killed in the same grotesque way that cows and pigs are killed, alive.

Why aren't the animals that we eat euthanized first?
Well, from what I know, the animals that are put to sleep are given shots filled with chemicals to kill them, and that if we eat that, then we will be eating the killing chemicals as well. And I'm sure that would bring about health risks.

I'm with spiffy, pigs and cows slaughtered and cut up into cookable cuts but Spot and Cuddles aren't slaughtered and ate because they are our companions to run after the frisbee or purr and rub against our leg.Traditionally when death is inevitable dogs and cats are put to sleep, that is a kind way of saying it when Spot and Cuddles meant so much to us.

Of course there are some societies that choose to slaughter and cut up Spot and Cuddles so they can eat them **wiping tears**

Because cats and dogs have owners who pay good money for their deaths to be painless. When pigs and cows are slaughtered, it is generally for the purposes of selling them as food so a company can make money....and euthanizing them painlessly would cost big bucks and hurt the bottom line, as well as damaging the "product." Sad, but the truth.

Dogs get slaughtered in some parts of the world and eaten. Once in awhile a pig or cow gets "put to sleep" too.

Maybe the real question is why we try to hide death by calling in "put to sleep"?

Western culture is pretty bad about that. We try to pretend that death doesn't happen. Even the U.S. puts all sorts of restrictions in place so that the American public doesn't see the aftermath of the Iraq war. Since when do you see dead Americans on TV?

Even though there are some countries that do eat dogs and cats, they are, as you know, not eaten here in the U.S.A., at least I've not heard of any places that do. In the U.S.A. dogs & cats are the pets and though some people have been known to have pigs and probably cows as pets too, there purpose here is to become our food.

Depends on what country your in. In China Cats & dogs and small pigs are a real delicacy and used as farm animals. In France horse meat is served along with frogs legs and snails.
In the rain forests grub worms and other insects are roasted and become the main meal. When locust invaded the USA it was a diaster. When they invaded Japan where rice is grown under water and locust is their main meat it was believed delivered from heaven. So what if some people who adopt certain animals as pets and decide to give them a humane passing? In Japan where pigeons are raised as meat they snip their heads off with a special kind of scissors.
Most animals are treated very bad, only a very few have loving homes and kind lives.

We have a resident of our neighborhood, who is not an American, we'll let that part for you to decide, and every since they've moved in, cats disappear regularly.....we know what's going on around here now and everyone has made reports about it. They're being watched now for animal cruelty. The Police here even knows it but they're waiting to catch them with some.
