Jack Russell Terrier - lots of the terriers would meet your needs but look different from your rat terrier.
Another thought - I've had several golden retrievers but they have all been very different. So even if you get another rat terrier, it won't feel like you are replacing him. Like people, all dogs are different, even ones from the same breed.

I'd go with a fox terrier, male reaches around 18 pounds, super active, come in two varieties, wire or smooth haired. Built to run and they have a lot of stamina. Love to jump and play ball too. The jack russell's also a great bet. Good luck.

I used to have a rat terrier, he was amazing and always kept a smile on my face, a jack russel is the next best thing.

any kind of terrier sounds like it'd be good for you!!
but you shouldn't think that just because you get the same breed of dog, you are replacing another pet. It's not possible to replace an animal that you loved & lost. You can always make more room in your heart to love another animal just as much, for being their own personality.

I would suggest a jack russell terrier. They are a small, extremely energetic breed.

I am partial to Boston Terriers. Not only are they off-the-hook, hysterically active, they are so smart that they will invent their own tricks if you don't teach them more than two or three!
And they throw things with that powerful neck!
Play tug-of-war for HOURS on end.
Retrieve like retrievers.
Run around as if their lives depend on it.
Fearless. Sharp. Rugged. 15-18 lbs. of solid muscle.
