How safe is 47th Street to 40th street on 7th/8th Ave at late night / early morning?

Question

If I am walking around this area at night may be around 11 PM
and early morning may be 4 PM then is it safe ?

Until what times normal good people walk on manhattan streets :) I will be a tourist in NYC.

I find it very safe in that Times Square area, especially along Broadway and 7th Avenue - this is one of the most heavily-traveled areas of the city (perhaps the world!!), and that's a good thing.

However, things start to quiet down a bit as you start to move towards 8th. 8 Av and 42 St is also the Port Authority Bus Terminal. I generally try not to spend as much time around there. Many "residents" have chosen to take sleeping bags and make that building their home/sleeping area. Take it for what it's worth.

However, stay in well-lit, well-traveled areas, and you'll generally be fine all night. They don't call it "the city that never sleeps" for no reason! :-)

People can be found on the streets of Manhattan 24 hours a day.. it truly is the city that never sleeps...

I agree with the other guy, that area is very safe.. just don't do anything stupid and act like you know where you are going and you'll be fine.

Seventh Avenue is a lot safer than Eight Avenue, yet Eight Avenue has changed a lot over the last 10 years, and today it is relatively safe at all hours. If you go west to Ninth Avenue and 50th Street, that's Hell Kitchen. Once a dangerous neighborhood, today it's a lot safer.
