First, it's Bar Mitzah. Mitzah Means Blessing. You should say "Matzel Tov" to the Family (which Means "Your family is blessed") and congratulations to the person being Mitzahed.

Often gift giving is easier if you understand the occasion - so - a Bar or Bat Mitzah is most like a graduation - the recipient is graduating from Childhood.

What would you give someone at a graduation? Most people give Pen and Pencil sets, and so the same for this Mitzah. Money is also appropriate - just cash in an envelope. A book - maybe one of your favorites or a gift card to a book store. Also anything relating to a hobby the person has.

If you are under 18 - then a $15.00 gift in cash wouldn't be frowned upon - everyone knows kids have very little pocket change. If your an adult I'd hustle my rear down to a book store and have a sales person show me the bargain books and hope you can find the perfect one.

If he is a friends kid then 20 to 25 would be cool but if he is family like a nephew or cousin, sporting event tickets always work

$20 to $25 would be appropriate.

Money is always good! Like a wedding, guess-timate the price of the meal you will eat and give that much - that's what someone told me once.
