Madalyn Murray O'Hair was angry about some things... angry people don't make good spokespeople.

Wouldn't you be combative and hostile if 90% of your fellow citizens hated your guts? I've lived as an atheist for 51 years. Can you even imagine how much abuse I've suffered at the hands of "loving" Christians? Want an example? The very next question, after yours, asks if atheists should be spayed or neutered.
By the way, do you also remember that Mrs. O'Hair and her family were brutally murdered, cut into small pieces, and stuffed into steel drums. Care to take a guess who would do such a thing? Hint: it wasn't atheists.

O'Hair's dead. Try again by citing a set of living examples of combative and hostile atheists. I'm a believer, but the vast majority of atheists I've met are anything but hostile. Sure, they'll strongly defend their points during a debate, but so will any other rational human being. I've found most of them to be well-read, polite, and often displaying a good sense of humor.

Unfortunately, just as many Christians (supposedly Christians) are just as combatative and hostile...take for example that church down in Kansas that protests at funerals for homosexuals. DEFINATELY not following the example of Christ. But that is what a lot of people think of Christians. Jesus commanded His disciples this way:
"I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves." Matthew 10:16
This is pretty clear..Christians are to be non-combatative in our dealings with non-believers. No one has ever been shamed or argued into the Kingdom. Plenty have been loved in.
My point is:Atheists are perhaps "combative and hostile" because the image of Chrisianity is worse...
"The commandments, "Do not commit adultery," "Do not murder," "Do not steal," "Do not covet," and whatever other commandment there may be, are summed up in this one rule: "Love your neighbor as yourself." Romans 13:9
If Christians could all practice this in truth...WOW! what a world we could have!

Yes I remember her. Think of her role. She was born in 1919 (not a period of great free-thought), baptized a Presbyterian, and later in the 1960's fought for the cause of separation of church and state. She had to be strong and stand up for equal rights, or as you put it, combative and hostile..
However, her combativeness did not represent all atheists any more than Pat Robertson's combativeness represents all Christians.

Not at all. They are very kind, gentle, and generous. This derives from their love for mankind and this natural earth. One that is not diluted by delusions of a world beyond the grave. In fact, atheists often compliment me on my shamisen playing. They tip quite hansomely.

No. They're frustrated with Fundies spouting off ridiculous hateful statements and bible verses that have nothing to do with anything.
