Hair build-up can be many things. Some products can build up on the hair and leave "dandruff". Minerals from water can build up on your hair as well. ( only if you have well water). Chlorine can build up and turn blond hair green. Medication is another hair build-up problem especially pain medication from the doctor and this can change the affect of perms and hair color. To get rid of it you can go to your salon and ask for a clarification treatment. Or if you are a do it at home person go to Sally's Beauty Supply and ask an employee for a clarification packet. the instructions should be on the back. If your build-up is not that severe you can use a deep cleansing (clarifying) shampoo. Lather the shampoo and let set for 10 min before rinsing. For extra cleansing cover head with plastic cap after lathering and use heat for 10 min.

Hair buildup is when there is so much styling product in your hair that it may start to look greasy and unclean. You may also have hair buildup if you swim in a pool that uses chlorine.
You may get rid of it by using special clarifying shampoos. I recommend Suave Daily Clarifying, Neutrogena, or Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three. You may also try a home remedy.
Mix 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1 Tbsp baking soda (it will fizz a lot on contact, so mix it in a large cup). Pour onto wet hair in the shower working from roots to end. The vinegar will leave your hair shiny which is a plus. You must (MUST) shampoo after to remove the vinegar smell and use a good conditioner because this will remove residue, but dries hair out. I would not recommend doing this more than once a month or if your hair has recently been colored or permed.

Hair build up is the residue left on your hair by the products you use - even if you only use shampoo and conditioner, you can get residue build up. Build up weighs hair down and makes it look dull and lack shine. One way to get rid of it is to use a clarifiying shampoo like Pantene Clarifiying Shampoo once a week. You probably don't want to use it much more than that, because then it may strip your hair of its natural oils (if you use a lot of products twice a week is probably good). Hope this helps!

Hair build up consists of the wax in a hair product used to make your hair shine in the beginning of the products use. After a while though this wax builds up and starts to make your hair dull, heavy and feeling grimy after you shower. I have found it in cheap shampoo's and salon shampoo's. If I don't alternate shampoo's every week it gets worse.
The best way that I have found to deal with waxy hair build up it to use baking soda with my shampoo. First I will put baking soda in my wet hair, just use it dry and work it into your wet hair, then I will take a good amount of a good grease cutting dish soap and work it into my hair and baking soda, add a bit of water to make it suds up and trust me with the combo it will suds up good. Work it in and when you feel you have lathered good then rinse it out. After rinsing your hair will feel dry and might even squeak when you ring water out of it, now you want to use a conditioner of your choice. Your hair will soak it up because you had just stripped it. Leave it sit for a min or two, then rinse out and you will now have very soft, and thin feeling hair. After I do this my hair is always much softer because there is nothing weighting it down any more. I do this monthly. I have also heard of using vinegar, I tried it and could not get over the smell, so I stick to the baking soday method. Good luck.

hair build up I think is when you put too much chemicals on it then you get a build up whereas if you just use a good shampp and one cup of apple cider vinegar for the rinse everytime you wash your hair you will never have a build up problem again.
