Well according to my study of Linguistics & Phonetics of Arabic dialects ,I would say neither Gulf nor Egyptian dialect is more closer to Standard .
Both of them are far away from Standard & that's why a non native soeaker of Arabic who studied the Standard form wouldn't understand a whole conversation in Egyptian or Gulf dialect.
According to Phonological level "the way sounds are produced"I would say "Palestenian dialect" is the most close while western Arabic is most different dialect.
If you are interested ..have a look on this link you would find Audio for Standard Arabic "Classical ' and for "Levantine Arabic" that is spoken in Lebanon , Palastine & Syria.

Hope it helps.

Gulf Arabic is closer to Classical Arabic than Egyptian Arabic.
Also, the Gulf have different accents, but the closest to Classical Arabic is Saudi.
Egyptians pronounce some letters differently than how it is in Classical Arabic.
Maybe Egyptian is more popular since they make lots of popular films.

it's true that all gulf countries r rich, but the most popular kind of Arabic is [Jordanian,Syrian,Palestinian],it's true that ''khaliji''is the native Arabic, but it can't be easy to everyone to understand,TAKE IT FROM ME,what ever happen DO NEVER EVER learn Egyptian, coz it's funny and weird'''EVEN IN THE ARABIAN WORLD''.ANOTHER THING:when u learn Arabic they don't teach u a particular accent, they teach u the ORIGINAL ARABIC which is the best.....i mean u can speak it anywhere in the Arab world, without the complications which may happen because of the difference of the phrases from an accent 2 another.GOOD LUCK....

To my understanding, the Syrian dialect is the closest to MSA. Egyptian is not the closest. However, Syrian isn't MSA, it is just closer.
