you're not supposed to, there are diffinate possabilities for getting it stuck in the retainer or breaking the retainer. but if he seems to be able to do it without damaging the reatainer and without it being really awkward to manage, i guess it's alright (this is ignoring most normal arguments against chewing gum, such as its laxative effects or stomach ulcers). it'll be fine untill it isn't. then he'll be really embaraced having to go to the orthodontist to get the gum out of his retainer.

When I was a little kid, I had to wear a retainer for a knocked-out front tooth, and the dentist told me NOT to chew gum of any kind, but I could suck on it, then spit it out.
