Please only answer if you have been in a similar situation. I went for my first prenatal visit today. They did a drug screening on me, and I worried. I was around a friend the other day who uses drugs,(wont be happening again) and she was smoking meth. Is there anyway I will show positive for this and if yes will they take my baby??

No im not on probation, and yes I went in the first time at 20 weeks. Have been trying to get a visit as soon as I found out but did not find out til I was 3 months preg. I thought this was also odd for them to do a drug screening, but if u dont believe me check the policys for that hospital.

I doubt you'll test positive, however, you really REALLY need to fess up to your OB and let them know you were exposed to it. Second hand smoke from Meth is very dangerous. If you didn't smoke it and will not expose yourself to it again you have nothing to worry about. I was exposed to marijuanna early in my pregnancy and fessed up to my OB. He was really kind about it and once he confirmed it wouldn't happen again he gave me tremendous peace of mind about the situation and alleviated some of my guilt. My little one is happy and healthy I'm pleased to say!
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS- I just went back through all the questions you've asked so far. I got a little cross-eyed trying to keep up with all the dates of when you asked each question but if you've not already done this then honey, sit down with your OB and share all of your fears and anxieties about STDs, Aids, Meth exposure, etc. They won't take your baby away if you're not doing drugs and they won't take your baby away if you have an STD or even AIDS. In fact, they've already known patients who really DID have these issues and not just the fear of them. Don't let embarrassment or even fear stop you from asking questions. It's the doctor's job and they'll be happy to impart knowledge on you AND it will ease your mind once and for all. You're going to have a BABY! Get all these questions/fears answered so you can relax and set it aside and be joyful. Congrats honey!

Yes you may show positive IF it occurred within a specified time. If your hanging around someone smoking meth while you're preggers, they are not your friend. And you need to re evaluate the so called friendship. A baby is such a fragile thing. Especially so while being formed in the womb. But even after birth, you don't want to be around anyone like that. As for "taking the baby" It isn't common for a drug test to be sprung on an a pregnant person without some cause. You don't say if your on probation or what the whole circumstance is. So I can't give an opinion on having the baby "taken away". Hope you work things out and have a healthy happy baby and a long happy life.

I was terrified to be pregnant, and I was in my mid-twenties. You always hear the horror stories of pregnancy, and given the hormones, emotions and other stress of pregnancies, it's not surprising you would begin to worry about everything that can go wrong. I started watching all the baby shows on TV - I must have seen every episode of the Baby Story on TLC. Some things go wrong, yes, but what you will see is that the vast majority of births go on without a hitch. And yes, it hurts when you are in labor, but honestly, I had menstrual cramps that were almost as bad, and kidney stones that made me want to kill myself. And I had no epidural - completely natural childbirth that just didn't go as I had planned. I promise - it will be fine. And regardless, worrying won't make it go away. Take some classes at your hospital so you know what to expect. Find a good friend or family member to be your birth coach. Remember that women have been giving birth to babies for as long as humans have been around. Your youth may turn out to be a blessing - you are likely healthier and have better stamina then a lot of older moms. Good luck!

They may be able to detect trace ammounts of it...but chances are that you're body has cleaned it all out since you were around it. They're not going to take the baby away (can't do it yet anyway) but they will probably test you and the baby again at birth, if they detect any drugs during that screening then you may have some problems. I would suggest not hanging out with that person again, at least not when they're high or getting high. It's not a good situation for you to be around. If for some reason they do detect the meth in you, explain the situation to them, they're not going to be able to do anything until the baby's born anyway.

I'm sorry to be harsh, but if this is the type of environment that you are in regardless if you were directly smoking it or not, maybe they should take the baby...This is not a healthy situation for a baby...Or a pregnant women.

Didn't you think at the time that being there may have a negative effect on your baby? Once you become pregnant it is no longer about you anymore. For you child's sake, I hope that you can turn your lifestyle around as well as the people you choose to surround yourself with. I wish you the best of luck and hope that things will work out for you and your baby.

I doubt it will show up. Don't trip on the people not everyone knows what it is like to grow up in the hood or lower classes or even with family hooked ya know. A lot of people just don't realize how common drug use is. That doesn't justify it and I hope you are able to make wise decisions that always put your child first. If it is in your blood they will more than likely monitor you the rest of your pregnancy and put you in classes and social programs but God FORBID it show up in your baby's blood after birth because you will lose your child (that would only happen if you are a user).

It depends on state law. If you were just in the same room with her you won't pop up positive, but if you smoked a little you will. You should not be hanging out with those people because it definitely will be bad for the baby after he or she is born. If it comes up positive you can get charged for child abuse in some states. Some don't have laws about this. Just kind of depends on if the state wants to prosecute you or not. But, having meth in your system during pregnancy is very unhealthy for your child. Be smart, act like an adult. Babies exposed to meth are at risk of having a stroke in the womb.

I think it is a very good chance that you will test positive because you were breathing in the smoke! You are 20 weeks pregnant you still have time to prove your a fit mother, just don't hang out with people that do drugs!!! You are going to be a mommy children are gifts from god;)

Unless you want to lose your baby you need to make new friends, If one of them gets busted, and you are around them you are going to be in for the fight of your life to keep your baby. If you were using and quit Please remove yourself from the presence of all the people who use drugs, it is the only way to insure yourself a clean and healthy pregnancy. Just remember that people who use drugs don't always have the best judgement and if they are carrying and you don't know it and you are pulled over you are going down too.

i was in trouble a lot for drugs, specifically meth, growing up (been clean for some time) and you really cant show positive for meth second hand its almost impossible unless they blow it right into your mouth and you inhale it. they usually wouldnt give you a drug screen unless they thought you were using. snd they probably will give you one at the time of birth and if you are positive they will take your baby, they'll test the baby too. thats in the state of CA anyways
