A MiG 17 can out-turn a Phantom and a Phantom can out-dive and outrun a MiG 17... ideally the MiG pilot would want to draw the Phantom pilot into a close quarters, herky-jerky dogfight in which the MiG's superior maneuverability would allow it to hold it's own against the more formidable Phantom... a Phantom on the other hand would want to keep his adversary at arms length where the Phantom pilot could use his superior missile technology and, if necessary, escape a bad situation with his faster aircraft... up-close the F-4 is at a severe disadvantage because it is not armed with a machine gun and its inferior maneuverability... as for your Vegas odds I'm gonna go with the kill ratio American pilots had over their Communist adversaries during Vietnam: 3-to-1 in favor of the F-4...

The Mig 17 is the better close in fighter with a tighter turn radius while the F4 is faster & better long range fighter.
Still, I think the it was a Mig 17 they described going head to head with an F4 over Vietnam & the F4 pulled it out. But it was quite the battle. The F4's did have the better kill ratio during Vietnam but pilot skill was a factor in that.
I know the early F4 didn't have guns which were quite a hindrance but don't recall if they address that with the F4E. If they did then I'd give it to the F4 hands done.

Well since they are equal skill it would probably be the MIg 17, since they are quicker and more manuverable. The F-4 would still have a good chance.

I would say the odds would be 1-1 since it would be a toss up, there are other variables that would need accounted for.

10:1-ish. The F-4's radar, missiles, internal gun on the E model, twin engines and TWO guys in the fight give an enormous advantage. Now where are you gonna find two aircrews willing to fight to the death in antique aircraft to prove the point?

No odds needed. It's been proven in war. F-4 hands down!

HMMMMM....equil skill.....I'd bet on the F-4, since Migs have low reported kills.
