Sooo many people here are misinformed on the subject of immigration, so let me clarify a few things. First of all, the immigration bill is still very much alive, and will be passed within a few weeks. Now, for those of you who are happy that the cloture was rejected and still hope that the bill wont pass, tell me this: You would rather let all the illegal immigrants stay here(including 800,000 REAL criminals) then actually know who is in the country and kick out the ones that do not respect this nation and that commit crimes here? Because not only does the bll actually allow the country to know who is here, but it also provieds border security, and until that is reached, only probationary legal status will be granted to undocumented immigrants. So ask yourself this: Do you want the immigration problem fixed? And do you want it fixed in a realistic way? Than support, not oppose, this great bill. It is the best way to fix it, and you will be gald you did once it passes.

P.S. - If you would rather "enforce the laws" who are you kidding? The laws here are not being enforced because they are unenforcable. if you want enforcement, this is the bill that will do it.

The people who think current laws will be enforced are delusional...so its either this bill or silent amnesty

You say we need to legalized the undocumented immigrants. First off they are ILLEGAL undocumented immigrants. Why should they be allowed to break the law? They broke the law by coming to the U.S. and now you want to reward them with amnesty? Criminals that are illegals and have been caught are sitting in jail now, once their time is served for breaking yet another law that got them put into jail those illegals will be deported.
Great.. so that guy that gets deported can then come back to the U.S. on a zvisa?
The only realistic way to fix this problem is to CLOSE the southern and northern border. THEN start deporting every person that isn't here legally. AFTER that you can then reopen the immigration program.
Again if you are not for America you can leave at anytime!

The main problem with your approach (and the bill in general) is that it gives a clean slate to the millions of illegal immigrants who chose to ignore our laws and come here just because they wanted to. What the country needs to do is send a clear message that we don't reward those who ignore our laws...we punish them.

If we make the punishments so severe that they don't dare try to break them, and we actively seek out and deport those already here, AND we prosecute to the fullest any employer that hires them, we'll slowly fix the problem. If we take away their ability to work unless they are legal, they'll have no reason to stay, and go back until they can be here legally. Then they can have all the jobs they want...as long as they obey our laws.

Maybe going and arresting all the ones hanging out outside of Lowe's and Home Depot would be a good start? I mean, that is where the media goes when they want sound bites. If the media has no trouble finding illegals to interview, then ICE should have just as easy a time finding them to deport.

The 'real' criminals are hardly going to line up to apply, now are they?

Also, I differ from you on what a 'real' criminal is.

and that bill would exacerbate, not cure the illegal immigration problem IMHO.

If they were planning to enforce it, why not ban sanctuary cities? And why not deport those who already had their day in court and are fugitives from deportation orders? And who thinks they are NOT lying when they bill it as 'enhancing border security' when it cuts the fence and border patrol officer numbers already enacted into law IN HALF?

And who would believe a word they said once they tried to pretend it did enhance border security?

And why does 'a sense of congress to excelerate SPP' find its way in on page 210 when SPP has NEVER seen the light of day in hearings or debate before congress? And why are there those curious exceptions for illegals from 'contiguous countries' from enforcement provisions when according to Pew Hispanic Center, more of our illegal immigrants come from Mexico than from all other countries put together?

You have to earn trust, and the coalition, and Bush, lost it.

Border security that will be up to BUSH to say we have met...He doesn't know what it is to begin with! He is sitting here thumping that the border is having less people cross, but if you look at the LOCAL papers they say quite the opposite!

Also you would be FOR this bill if you are FOR THE NORTH AMERICAN UNION...check out pages 210 and 211...the SPP..or Prosperity Program as it is referred to there is the bases on for which the NAU is being created! They also have a Parliament which will be OVER our supreme court! I have official papers from Chertoff that state this!

Ha, if the bill tries to pass the Senate it will be killed by the House...and you can COUNT that on happening!

If our current laws are unenforceable (which they are not) the new ones would not or 'could not' be enforced either. Many illegals were saying they would choose to remain illegal rather than comply with the new laws anyway. I will in no way support amnesty for people who abuse our system and march in our streets DEMANDING rights.

No they would rather satisfy some irrational rhetoric than actually know who is and is not in this country. John McCain said it best to the other people in the debate if you do not like it come up with something real not just spew out BS. They would rather just have illegals running amuck uncounted for and still living in the shadows for them to still commit crimes and still present a real danger to us. The problem is when you let things lurk in the shadows it becomes a big danger to the country, than just having illegals have some legal status here. At least now that we know who they are we can start to apply our laws regarding legal immigrants to them. That means commit a felonly and your out. Better then just picking up an illegal and having no clue what to do with him.

They'll never understand will they. It makes me so mad because people aren't realistic. There are two sides-For the bill and opposed to the bill..and the ones that are opposed are only opposed because it allows illegals to EVENTUALLY become legal citizens. They don't think that hefty fines is enough of a punishment for those who committed a misdemeanor by illegally crossing the border(seems like a good enough punishment to me for something about as criminal as jay walking)....They think that it is amnesty when it isn't. Amnesty is letting a crime go unpunished...but charging a few thousand dollars for a crime is considered a punishment fit for the kind of crime they committed. They go on and on about how they are draining our medical care, our welfare system, and are driving without licenses.....If they were able to have probationary legal status then they would be able to get health care and have drivers licenses and we'd be able to track them! No one wants to be realistic. They want them all deported. Fat chance of that ever happening!!!

BS, our border is 200 yards long we could build the southern wall in half that space and secure the border, then round up the Illegal misanthropes and kick their brown buts out!!!!

Nice try freeloader. There is much more than just akin to "jay walking" as one poster claims. There is tax fraud(a felony). Health care fraud(oh look another felony). The list goes on and on.
