That is what free will is. The right to believe in your choosing. Yes most do contradict each other I think because we all have different perspectives and ideas on life. You could ask why are there so many governments, or parenting techniques that is the beauty of being human.

Actually, when you break down the many religions into their basics, you find that they really do have a lot in common. They believe in a higher power, they believe in doing good things and being good people. The differences come in how they interpret these basic ideas. When it really comes down to it, people are trying to make sense of a seemingly non-sensical world and they filter their religious and spiritual views through their own cultures and experiences and views of the world around them.

There are so many because no 3 people on earth agree completely about everything, and no 10 people in any group agree completely about anything. And not all religions contradict each other, some merely place emphasis on one area while another places emphasis on another area of the same religious belief.

There is only one truth, but it can only be experienced subjectively. It is similar to letting 10 journalist write a story about a city, you'll get 10 different stories even though there is only one city. Location, personal experience, goals and desires, culture and personal history distort the one reality.

This is even before power hungry people, social engineering, ego's, nation building and prejudices distort the reports of the spiritual realm.

If you want to know. Go there yourself, build your own system or be caught in someone else's.

Because Satan is trying to keep us from knowing the truth & keep us from returning to our Heavenly Father.

In addition to the answer TG gave.
Peter was given the keys to heaven by Jesus in scripture but when Peter died he did not hand off those keys to anyone else so when Peter died the keys went with him.
The keys that were given to Peter by Jesus were restored to the earth to Joseph Smith by Peter. These keys have been passed down to each President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Jesus didn't say that there was any church except one that had His name. Hence the name The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints.
For all the catholic church names those are churches to whom they are named after. for example: St Peter's is the church of Peter, St. Ann's is the church of Ann, St. Vincent's is the church of Vincent, etc.... That is why the true Church of Jesus Christ is named after Him.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The latter-day saints just designates who attends it. This is the latter days & we are saints hence latter-day saints.

There are also 17 scriptures in the Bible that tell what needs to be a part of the true church of christ. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only church that has ALL 17 points. These 17 points are:

1. Christ organized the Church (Eph 4:11-14)
2. Must bear the name of Jesus Christ (Eph 5:23)
3. Must have a foundation of Apostles and Prophets (Eph 2:19-20)
4. Must have the same organization as Christ's Church (Eph 4:11-14)
5. Must claim divine authority (Heb 5:4-10)
6. MUST HAVE NO PAID MINISTRY!!! (1 Cor 9:16-18; Acts 20:33-34; John 10:11-13)
7. Must baptize by immersion (Matt 3:13-16)
8. Must bestow the gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands (Acts 8:14-17)
9. Must practice divine healing (Mark 3:14-15)
10. Must teach that God and Jesus are seperate and distinct individuals (John 17:11; 20:17)
11. Must teach that God & Jesus Christ have bodies of flesh & bone (Luke 24:36-39; Acts 1:9-11
12. The officers must be called by God (Heb 4:4; Ex 28:1; 40:13-16)
13. Must claim revelation from God (Amos 3:7)
14. Must be a missionary church (Matt 28:19-20)
15. Must be a RESTORED church Acts 3:19-21
16. Must practice baptism for the dead (1Cor 15:16&29)
17. By their fruits ye shall know them (Matthew 7:20)

Why are these things important? Hebrews 13:8

Many real religions have lots in common, for example views on peace, love, etc etc etc.

Some are not religions at all but cults (such as Scientology).

Others have been made up by people and therefore have different opinions and views, just as people do.

Because Jesus established a church, not a religion. And for over 1,500 years it was the only church, and then Martin Luther got a hair up his butt and "protested" the true church of Jesus Christ, The Holy Catholic Church. And since that first protest they just keep on protesting and it has multiplied to over 30,000 protestant denominations

"All men alike stand condemned, not by alien codes of ethics, but by their own, and all men therefore are conscious of guilt." --The Problem of Pain

"The essence of religion, in my view, is the thirst for an end higher than natural ends..." CS Lewis in
--A Christian Reply to Professor Price' Phoenix Quarterly

And because there is a spiritual battle being waged for the souls of men it appears there are many religions. In truth there are many gods but only one God and only two major religions.

The two religions are the one of works and the one of grace.

In the religion of works man makes himself clean before god by doing things - reading the Holy Books, pilgrimage, saying prayers, giving alms, etc, lighting candles paying a priest doing the rosary, meditating whatever.

In the religion of grace, God stoops down to man and loves him because God Himself alone can reconcile man to Himself. He does this through offering His own life as a sacrifice.

"God has paid us the intolerable compliment of loving us, in the deepest, most tragic, most inexorable sense."
Lewis --The Problem of Pain
