Faster in what sense? I would tend to think that speed isn't the most important thing. The eclipse is less reliable, less attractive, and is not a 4 door. The nissan's engine: great. The nissan has an award winning engine, the new altima has great styling, and it comes in manual as well. Eclipses have been total crap since they got rid of the gs-t and gs-x.
Actually, faster is going to come down to gearing, aerodynamics, and powerband, not just weight. And that weight calculation johnboy makes is not accurate at all. For every 10 pounds a car is heavy, subtract 1 hp, is more accurate. So, if the eclipse is lighter, it will equal the hp out more. But hp does not equal acceleration, but torque does. Hp has more to do with high end speed.

14.4 1/4 mile 0-60 in 5.8 secs
Not the newest altima, but a close comparison

14.2 1/4 mile 0-60 in 5.5 secs

14.9-15.0 1/4 mile and 0-60 in 6-6.4 secs with the new altima coupe (this last link actually gives the speed edge between the two cars to the altima, go figure).
The main downfall with the mitsu is the weight displacement and the suspension that is too soft to allow for traction for its 260 lb/ft torque.

I haven;t had the pleasure of driving the 3.5 liter fast yet. But Nissan is a much better car than Mitsubushi quality wise and more modern too. I don't think you can go wrong with Nissan Altima Coupe. However the CVT transmission takes a little getting used to.

The Nissan is a bit better, a bit more torque, plus 6 gear manual and weighs a little less..and gets better MPG, i personally hate the eclipse, not my cup of tea...If i were to choose i would choose the new Nissan Altima Coupe.

its gonna come down to the weight difference. 7 hp is a difference of 2.6%, so if the eclipse is more than 2.6% lighter than the altima it will accelerate faster. bottom line is get what you like the looks of, they are both fast for front wheel drive cars. IMHO the eclipse looks better...
