Outside of just speaking our language what do you want immigrants to do. Is just learning English basically all you want from immigrants or do they have to do more?

Barb have you read any of the responses and you call me stupid. All I ask is just learn English, because everyone and their dog knows if you do not understand English you will not suceed in thes country. I personally feel that is really the most you need to do to assimilate what others do is their own perogative.

I don't feel they need to assimilate in all ways. I think that we don't have any right to change who people are, their customs, or where they came from. The only thing I expect is that if they are here for more than a few months that they should try and learn English..and as long as they try that is good enough for me because I know English is a difficult language to learn, and that any language is difficult to learn and takes time. I don't expect anything over night. Personally I don't care if they remain loyal to their country. They should!! If I moved to another country I would always be loyal to the United States and thankful for everything that I've been given here and for being born here, and for my freedom...I would expect everyone to be proud of their countries the same way I am mine.

I want assimilation of all immigrants meaning that they learn English, know about the history of our country, and that they think of themselves as Americans. We should not allow dual citizenship; you are either an American or you are not! Communists, Hispanic Reconquistadors, and Muslim fanatics need not apply for citizenship.
We do need diversity in the type of immigrants that we allow into our country. Currently, the vast majority are Latinos and most of them are Mexican. It is just plain foolish to allow millions of immigrants from a neighboring country into our country who have a far different, third world culture, and who cannot speak our language. The Mexican immigrants refuse to assimilate, and they remain loyal to Mexico all of their lives.
We must build the border fence and put more border patrol agents and National Guardsmen on duty in the border states.

I want assimilation. Language being the most important but there are other customs that probably could use tweaking also.
If they want to be here for the benefits of citizens ship then they should become participating citizens and assimilate. They can keep their customs, just dont try to be separate from the rest.

Assimilation does mean the language but otherwise an attitude of accomodation, understanding that they should be going the extra step to accomodate and not expect the native to have to change. The fact is, I have never in my life seen a foreigner here who was TRYING to accomodate people who didn't get practically smothered with support from us natives. It is just an attitude.

My wants are simple and all I want is for them to quit playing their loud music after 10pm in the evening and become a citizen like the other legals did and since they are in our country they should learn a bit of English

What a ridiculous question....I'm going to assume you are about 12 years old.
The whole purpose of emigrating to our country is to live free. What an immigrant does once here, is nobodys business as long as that immigrant obeys the law.
Unless you are a full-blood Native American Indian with no other races mixed in, you are an immigrant too - or your parents or grandparents are. When they came to this country, they made a life for themselves according to the way they want to live....that is called FREEDOM.
No one has the right to say what a person "should" do.

Learn English if they plan to stay more than 3 months. (We don't bother to learn Spanish when we go visit Mexico for a week...)
Obey the laws.
That includes coming in legally.
Legal immigrants are welcome.
Illegals need to get the hell back where they belong.

Assimilation to the level of being able to participate in public society. That doesn't mean they can't retain and enjoy their own language, customs, and culture; but in the commons, they can interact according to US mores.
