my hair is dark brown, recently dyed it with a non permanent dark red colour that only is visible on my roots for some reason.
If I dye my hair medium brown, will this cover the red?
thanks

The reason the color is just visible on your roots is because "virgin" hair takes on the tint more easily, that's why when you go to the salon they will color the rest of your hair first and then work the roots in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the process so that the color looks even.

In my experience, the only way to get rid of the red hue is to use an ash color, otherwise the red just keeps coming back.

Try a medium ash brown for example.

Any "golden" tones will probably take on a coper color.

You can also go to a beauty supply store, they sell an additive to add to the dye that "kills" reddish hues, just ask the ladies there they are usually beauticians in training.

If you just colored your hair recently you may want to wait at least 1 week before processing again, you don't want to damage your hair.

You just need to using a counter acting color to neutralize the red. The color should not be any lighter than the red you already have in it, but can be same level or darker if you want it. To neutralize the red you need to use green, therefore an ash color. Just make sure it is a green based ash not a blue and it should make it a nice brown. It may be a bit warmer but won't be red anymore. It will have some nice depth. Besides since you have bleached it first, in order to color back you would have to fill the bleached hair with the color its missing and in your case that is the red, so you've actually already saved yourself a step. Good luck

Maybe, but it has to be a very dark brown. I dyed my hair red ages ago and it's still in my hair, even though I dyed my hair back to its natural colour.

It will if you use the right hair color. Try Excellence by Loreal. It is gentle and does the job. Try to use a dark brown unless the red will show up again-

just wait to dye your hair until your hair goes back to its natural hair color, or else if you dye your red hair with brown hair dye, your hair will turn purple. That happened to my mom.
