Most atheists can call themselves atheists just because they belonged to the Christians. Because most atheists do not deny the existence of god in the first place, but rather the power of his church. They could not do this unless they were once familiar with its teachings and base tenets. And I think the real atheist is who has already experienced both sides and then decided, rather than the one who just claims that he is an atheist without even knowing how the other side works. I belonged to the Christians as well. But I left them. I did not fell comfortable there so I left to forge my own belief.

I don't think most people who say they are atheists, really are>
The reason is an "atheist" say he doesn't believe that God exists. But ask yourself if you didn't believe something was really there, would you bother to fight what doesn't exist?
Yes proclaiming "atheists" go to a lot of trouble to prove there is no God. It doesn't make sense to do that.
And God Himself says there is a knowledge of Him inside each one of us. It is built into how He created us....but people do not want to have to listen and follow God.
Many people "hate" God...for one reason or another....often how they were raised....etc. that is not atheism.
And they may be called "ex Christians because they once attended a church. That does not make a person a true Christian....one who follows Christ. It just makes him a church attender...or non-church attender....not at all the same thing.

Most atheists in the USA are ex-Christians. It's not a world-wide truth. Some other countries may have similiar situations though.
I was a Born-Again, Save Sealed and Convicted sinner, washed clean by the blood of Jesus.
But count me in that statistic, I'm an atheist now.

I did. When I was young. Read the whole christian bible -- old testament and new -- when I was seventeen or eighteen. That confirmed, for me, what I'd come to believe over the years: that gods, all gods, are mythical. I've been open to new information, but have never seen any. Unless I see evidence (although proof is preferable) for the existence of a god or gods, I will remain an atheist. It's the only logical conclusion.

C.S. Lewis, Lee Stroebel, Alister McGrath were all atheist that looked at the evidence and then dedicated their lives to Christ.
Atheists express their rage against God although in their view He does not exist. --C. S. Lewis
Even Professor Antony Flew the former atheist (30+ years of speaking as an atheist) that had debated men such as C.S. Lewis recently said that the latest biological research "has shown, by the almost unbelievable complexity of the arrangements which are needed to produce (life), that intelligence must have been involved." He just believes there is a God not the one of the Bible.
Many Chrisitians have gone the other way too usually after they didn't get their wish or something bad happened or someone told them a half truth about science. If those same Christians had read the Bible they would realize it is often harder to be a Christian than to have the "freedom" to do what they want, when and not worry about answering to anyone.... until they have to stand before God and answer why they didn't follow Jesus!
"Truth is absolute and knowable and must be searched for diligently, but many will try to hide it, deny it or muddy it." - annon.

Quite possibly a majority of them, although I'm not familiar with any study that quantifies exactly how many atheists are former members of religion X.
On the other hand, It is hard to, in good conscience, label one who abandons the faith they were indoctrinated with from childhood as ex-whatever, because these kids didn't choose whatever religion they were brought up with--it was all they knew, and all they were taught (most commonly taught that it was the 'only/true way' on top of that). Most atheists, myself included, started to reject the ideas once they became old enough to analyze them on their own--had they been introduced to NO religion before that point (the 'age of reason'), they obviously would not ever have been a member of that religion in the first place.
So, to be fair, it's less of an abandonment of one's religion, and more of a rejection of one's parents' (in most cases) religion.

Define Christian. Many people who went to church for a long time, and did all the religious rites, THINK they are Christians.
Many believe that Jesus existed, but don't live the life.
A CHRISTIAN is one who wants to BE LIKE CHRIST. One who has been born again, (You can call it brainwashing, my brains needed a good scrub). A person who has had a born again experience is highly unlikely to switch over to being an atheist. That person KNOWS what happened, and they KNOW they hooked on to a live wire. Now, some people who have been born again might have back slid-den for one reason or another, and are very angry at god for some perceived bad thing, like the loss of a family member in a senseless accident, or being paralyzed.
These people are not atheists, they are just mad at God.
To me Atheism is a religion in its own, for the following reasons:
A. Atheist cannot KNOW God doesn't exist. Atheist BELIEVES God doesn't exist (FAITH involved here).
B. Humans have what is called a 'sphere of knowledge', what we know. Outside that sphere is what WE DO NOT KNOW. God could be outside that sphere of knowledge.
This INCLUDES the theory of evolution. They say it is a fact, case closed. SO arrogant and stuck-up. read above, what is OUTSIDE their sphere of knowledge? THEY DON'T KNOW.
C. So, Atheist would have to have ALL KNOWLEDGE outside that sphere, (God-like quality)
D. Atheist would have to span all time, past, present, and future at the same time, so God could not be hiding under a rock somewhere, and have escaped the Atheist's notice.
This is another god-like quality.
So, This would make the Atheist GOD, defeating his own argument that god doesn't exist.:)

No,it isn't. I don't knowwhat your source is for that, but it certainly isn't accurate. The Scandanavian states and the Benelux countries are utterly dominated by persons whose great-grandparents may have practiced Christianity, but they didn't. Also China - perhaps the largest base of atheists - was never a Christian nation is the first place. As to "how many..." I can't imagine such statistics exist,or any study of comparable value. If you want to do one,be my guest. As to the question itself, same thing,I'm sure it's impossible to know.
