I will be traveling by car into canada this summer. They will be day trips. My question, at the border is a birth certificate acceptable as well as a valid drivers license to enter in and out of the country? I do not have enough time to acquire a passport since this trip is scheduled in about 6 weeks. thanks

The photo ID (passport, military ID, or valid driver's license issued in one of the 50 states or Canada) and proof of citizenship (passport, birth certificate, and/or naturalization papers) are required to cross into Canada.
If you are either a US or Canadian citizen, the passport is the only acceptable document when FLYING INTO the US after January 1 2007.
If you are a US or Canadian citizen traveling by land or sea INTO the US, you can use any of the listed documents until December 31 2007 ... after that, the only acceptable documentation will be a passport.
If you are a citizen of ANY OTHER COUNTRY, you MUST have a valid passport regardless of how you travel (also regardless of whether you are entering Canada or the US).

Since you are driving and coming this year yes. Right now you need a passport only to fly, and next year you will need a passport for any trip.

As long as you're traveling by car, your birth certificate and driver's license is enough. The passport requirement for travel by car or boat doesn't go into effect until January 2008.

You only need your drivers license, not your birth certificate.
No one really accepts a birth certificate (very old school) as it's not a positive form of ID. In addition, you really shouldn't be traveling with it anyway.
