Bcuz its distribution can be regulated, taxed and controlled.

Unlike drugs which is a free for all. If not for the war on drugs there would be ALOT of government folks out of work.
Look at it like this. If you had a REAL cure for the common cold, all the cold medicine folks would pay you to keep it OFF the shelves.
our country is built one thing. REPEAT BUSINESS and as addicitve as cigarettes are. thats a double bonus!

The ideal answer would be that the gov't recognizes that it is not our nursemaid and that we have the right to weigh the risks vs the benefits for ourselves and make our own choices.

However, it more likely has to do with the hazards of tobacco not being widely recognized prior to the last fifty years or so, while meanwhile the economies of several states became dependant upon tobacco production. So, legal tobacco kinda got grandfathered in.

The government is not responsible for what you choose to put in your body, be it smoke, alcohol or illegal drugs. And the american people wouldn't stand for it trying to be, you are likely to young, but they tried outlawing alcohol, it was a period called Prohibition, and it didn't work.

They can't regulate everything...it's not a drug and it doesn't control your mind like weed or crack does. There are a ton of things out there that are bad for you i.e. alcohol, trans fat...it's your choice as to what goes into your body.
