Under the terms of the surrender of the Iraqis during the first Gulf War, Saddam agreed to have UN weapons inspectors come in and VERIFY the number, amount, and type of WMD that Iraq had. Then Iraq would destroy those WMD under UN SUPERVISION. From the end of the First Gulf War to the start of the second one, Saddam hindered, delayed, and interfered with the inspectors ability to do their jobs. Hence the inspectors could not VERIFY that Iraq had destroyed those weapons.
Before the start of the Second Gulf War, the following countries had intelligence Iraq still had WMD:
US, Great Brittan, France, Spain, Germany, Russia and Israel amoung others.
Since the end of the Second Gulf War, we HAVE found WMD. Although it does come from the time of the Iran/Iraq war, its still WMD. It has been reported that those munitions had been degraded, and are not at full strength. Do a wikipedia search on Sarin, Nerve, Bister, Blood, and choking agents and see how little an amount it takes to kill hundreds/thousands of people. Even a degraded form of a Nerve agent can kill you with no problem.
Neither you nor I know what EXACTLY was in the intelligence reports that President Bush was briefed on. We only know what the press told us about it. Folks say Bush lied, people died. As I remember, all of the speaches the President mentioned WMD, he did not specify that time frame those munitions came from. So, the President said Saddam had WMD and we found WMD. Case closed.
People tend to believe what the press tells them without question. A a child of the 1960's, we were told NOT to trust what the press showed us without looking at ALL sides. How quickly that lesson your parents were taught was forgotten.
