the most accessible vein (the one they usually poke when they draw blood) is called the antecubital vein. that's on the other side of elbow joint. many clinicians will not use this vein however because an IV there will kink and stop infusing if the patient bends their arm. an IV in the back of the hand works much better.

people can be given an IV in any number of veins. sometimes these injections are given in the feet to hide the scar. a common vein on the hand is the metacarpal vein.
