Swearing on the bible is a load of.. smelly stuff. What if you don't believe in it? I mean, for me it would hold more credibility if they made me swear by Lord of the rings book, or something. It's ridiculous.

It is an intriguing question! Worth pondering, but I believe somewhat academic,. because in 200 years I believe we will be able to make much better use of all our technological advances. For example, in 200 years books will obviously be replaced by holographic images.
Now lets imagine you are in court. The year 2207. If your Christian, you find that you must swear to tell the truth before a life size 3 dimensional image of Jesus! If your Jewish, perhaps a 3 dimensional spitting image of Moses!! If your a pantheist perhaps a animated talking image of Earth, etc.
I think it would be very hard to look Jesus in the eye and lie, but for those rare individuals that might still make the attempt, the DA or defense attorney could opt for an alternative 3 dimensional image of Jesus on the cross! Now try to lie!

It's all about what people believe. Swearing on the Bible comes from fearing God and believing you would be struck down if you lied. For all the effect it has, might as well swear on satanic bible ... a load of road apples.

Don't forget you're talking about the court system of the country that claims their trust is in God, not Satan! Now, in 200 years things could very well be quite different. Scripture tells us that a time is coming where we will be forced to worship and accept the beast or not buy or sell anything and/or be put to death if we don't. So it very well might be a time in the very near future that we will have Satanic Bibles represented in our courts.
God Bless

Swearing on the Bible, Koran, or any other book, is not obligatory. It is merely a formality.
You can be sworn in on Shakespeare if you want. Bring you own copy and a reason why you want to be sworn in with Shakespeare.
You can also be sworn in without a book. Each courtroom has a script to follow for non-Christians and atheists.

it seems like you might be implying that allowing testimony after being sworn in on a satanic bible has something to do with morals.....like morals would decline if such a thing were allowed. i don't think that's necessarily true. may i ask how much knowledge you have of the satanic bible? =D

You don't have to swear on any book any more. You can just affirm to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. It's still a crime to lie in court, with or without the bible.

i never understood swearing on a religion if i swore by almighty god then that would by a lie from the off because i don't believe in god and technically the oath would never be valid and i could say what i like? they do have an atheist on in the UK now which is nice and you can replace the word God with what ever else you like

Hopefully it will become embarassingly obvious how ridiculous it is to try and enforce honesty through physical contact with a book. In our neck of the woods, the hand is up in the air, touching nothing. Perjury laws (not to mention conscience) are enough to keep most of us truthful.
