In Champagne, brut means less sugar has been added in the final stage. The more sugar, the sweeter the wine, and these are "sec" and "demi sec".

In flat wine, dry isnot just "not sweet", but also means that it has a taste that almost sucks the moisture out of your mouth. It's not necessarily an alcohol taste, but that's the best way I can describe it.

dry simply refers to the lack of sugar in wine. not how much it dries your mouth out. alot of the merlots people drink that are soft usually do have a bit of sugar added at the end in order to balance the tannins and acid. some cabs do this as well. almost all well made red wine is made dry. most well made white wines are also dry. there are exceptions. Brut is a name for champagne that has less than 15 grams of sugar per litre, as the human palate has a very difficult time detecting this. interestingly enough, dry champagne usually has more sugar than brut champagne. but i wont bore you with that. unless you ask

The order from sweetest to driest is Dry, Extra Dry, and Brut. Brut is the driest (though in some countries they sell an "Extra Brut"). There are some sweeter varieties such as Asti (Italian varieties), sec, etc. (French varieties) but these are not as readily available at stores in the United States. Many people will find "Dry" sparkling wine to be quite sweet.

Dry means that almost all of the sugar has turned into alcohol.

Certain grapes like Riesling and Gewurtzraminer tend not to ferment fully and will carry a bit of "residual sugar." Also, late harvest grapes have a thicker texture and will leave quite a bit of residual sugar, making them good dessert wines. Finally, Port is a style of wine where brandy is added to up the alcohol content and stop the fermentation from occuring, leaving a good deal of residual sugar in the wine.

Okay, let me try to explain this without making it difficult here.
Have you ever drank something "like lemonade" for instance & it makes your mouth water? Well, Some wines are like this which are your wet wines. They carry different types of fuit flavors. This is in "some" Cabs. but mostly in your merlots wines, which tend to be a softer taste on your tongue & smoother. Cabs "usually" tend to be a little more dry & most of them have the mixture taste being grape, smokey, black licorice texture which makes it bitter sweet. There are a few other types of wines out there & you should try going to a few wine tastings to get an idea on your taste of wines. They are fun & it's neat to see & hear about so many different types of wines that are out there. Hopes this helps!

Dry for a liquid means dry in taste...not sweet. The sweet stuff will usually say "sec" or "demi-sec" on the label.

It refers to the aftertaste. Dry and Brut are not sweet, or terribly fruity.
