Our Chihuahua barks at EVERYONE, especially children. We have kids at home, so it's not that he's not used to kids. It's hard to take him for walks or anywhere in the car because he barks hysterically at everyone that passes by. It's so embarassing. Help!

Barking can be a problem with small dogs especially. I am in the process of socializing my 7 1/2 year old male Bichon, again. He started barking at everything, as he did when he was just maturing, when we introduced a female into the household last year.

It's a long process that requires a great deal of patience and understanding friends.

Take your dog everywhere, keep it around people, arouond other animals, until it just looks bored (not to be confused with timid or quiet or withdrawn). When the world arouond your dog becomes no big deal, it will stop barking.

Trying to curb the behaviour itself doesn't work well, it only forces the dog to not do something that is in it's very nature. It isn't productive and can be cruel, like forbidding your teenager to use the phone, stay up late or be sullen. Any result would be temporary and completely faked (by the dog and by the teens).

He may be used to "your children" but I bet he didn't get thoroughly socialized with people at 2 and 3 months of age when his personality was forming and now strangers represent the the scariest thing in the world: the unknown; so he sounds alarm when he sees them. I don't know how old your dog is but it may not be too late to take him to busy places for people to pet and kids to play with until he's not alarmed by them. Then use the leash you trained him with to give him guidance and discipline.

You can't. You signed up for obnoxious behavior when you got a chihuahua. Research the breed next time.

The best offense is a good defense. Stuff a Chalupa in its mouth. It will be well fed and not have any room in its mouth to bark.

Try Tellington Touch. It worked well for me. Remember, anything of good quality will rarely come cheap, so be patient.

If it's a male dog.....
Tie up a rope to his testicles and pull hard everytime he barks.
He will stop barking but he will howl.

Pinch its yappy little head off.....

Sorry...it's inherent behaviour for him...it will take some serious training to break him of it. And have you ever tried to train a chihuahua????
