Call your vet that is the only safe way to know what to give your cat to calm them down.

You personally, nothing. Sedatives are controlled drugs, they are only available from vets. It's not unusual to have to have a cat sedated at the vet if he really needs grooming and it's impossible to do concious.

If it's just a matter of calming the cat a little, you could try Feliway which is a cat phermone spray/diffuser pack.

You don't really have to give a cat anything. Just calm them down before grooming. Or hold them still by holding the skin at the back of their neck. That is what all mother cats do, and it won't hurt the cat. Here is a website to help you out. Please feel free to email me with any further questions.
