Ok, I sent my motherboard back to the manufac. so they could fix my audio. They did and it works but windows was like "Oh no! Why is everything different!?" And it wouldn't boot.

So I ghosted my hard drive onto my external for backup. Then I formatted the drive and installed windows on it.

Problem is, before I sent the mobo back my files were private so only my user could access them. All my data is on the external drive and I can't get at it! And I can't boot up windows on my external drive to make them shared either.

I know there's a way to get at the files. Help!

Make sure you are logged into your computer as an administrator.

Then right click on the folder you are trying to access and go to "properties"

From there click on the security tab and click on advanced.

Next go to "owners". On that page you can select your adminstrator account and "replace owner of subcontainers and objects" and click yes.

hi, yes there is a solution, but hope your windows is an xp pro.
what you have to do is to take the ownership of the files. to do so you must unhide the permission tab. to do so: open any folder then goto tools -> folder options -> view and uncheck the last option that said "hide the permission tab (something like that)" and click ok.

step 2 is to take the ownership, to do so: right click your private folder choose properties -> permissions -> advanced -> ownership (or owners, don't remember) choose your current account, check the "replace owner of subcontainers and objects" and click ok

well you should access it now. sorry if the steps are not clear, since i have a french version of windows, but you should understand what i mean from the contexte :)

good luck

Nope.

You lost the "Master Key" to unlock private files when you formatted your HDD.

To keep your files private in future, Create your own User Account with a strong password and never let anyone log in as you. Then you won't need to make them private.

Live and learn.
