I get paid $15 an hour. My boss pays us every 1st and every 15th of the month instead of paying us weekly. I get paid 86 hours in order to compensate the other weeks. None of those hours are overtime, obviously.

I'm single with no dependents and after taxes I receive a pay of a $1000 and some change. I get taxed $290 approximately!

Does this sound right to you?

Yes it does sound right. But to answer the question in a way that might actually be helpful:

At $15 per hour for 86 hours per pay period X 24 pay periods per year (your situation as you just described it) you'll make $30960 this year.

At this years tax rates (which may go up or down next year, but shouldn't dramatically affect the advice) and assuming you don't have alot of interest or deductions, or other taxes, you'll have adjusted taxable income of around $22510, which would make your tax due around $3001. Since you're in a state that doesn't have state income taxes then they are currently withholding $4584 per year (around 14%) in Federal income tax and if you wanted, you could increase the number of exemptions on your W4 so that you get to keep more money up front instead of having to wait to get back a larger refund next year.

I'd say no If you thought you have any disease right now I would suggest avoid contact with tings that aren't just used by you. First call a doctor, it's the best thing to start with. What ever you do only see the doctor if you made a scheduled appointment because if you had it you might be infecting someone else. If you called first, they can be prepared. I hope that this doesn't turn into something as serious as cancer. Also, don't travel anywhere that is dangerous and the worst thing to do. Buy a face mask to protect you from the infected air your are breathing. Antivirals will help prevent swine flu reproduction. In mexico, they have antivirals in hotels. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THESE! THEY MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE! The most common way to prevent swine flu is to wash your hands regularly. When you get to your doctor, make sure that you are taking flu shots each year or season regularly. Caugh or sneeze into a tissue. Cary around with you a Kleenex. When you are done with the tissue, dispose of it immediately. If you get swine flu, don's worry the virus is only temporary. All viruses eventually go away. So remember this advice and you'll do fine.

Sounds about right, especially if you put zero allowances on your W-4. If you put 1, sounds just a little high on the deductions if there's nothing taken out other than federal income tax and social security and medicare.

For clarification, your income tax would be 3001, but in addition you will pay 1920 for SS tax and 449 for Medicare tax (using 2006 tax rates). You can reduce the amount of income tax witholding, but not the SS or Medicare tax.
