I am where you are on this, but, I am gathering perhaps a more coherent understanding of why I should purchase a Trek, Raliegh or Cannondale over a Walmart Schwinn. Certainly, I am not an expert on the subject like many who may have already answered, but I can tell you from the point of view from someone who is considering the same question too. Bike shops view bike riding as a solution. A valid option to the car for people who are discriminating in value and reliability. These people are busy and serious about what they do, weather on park trails or on a winding country road. The shop will stand behind what they sell because it is their rep and they have an old fashioned sense of ownership relative to customer satisfaction and pride. They want it to work precisely and trouble free. They look at a person purchasing a bike, as replacing a car, improving ones health, enjoying more personal and family time. They see themselves as purveyors of "smelling the roses." Like a shoe, they will make sure the bike fits your leg inseam, the bikes geometry is correct for your body type and riding position because you will be living with your choice for years to come. While they know their products in a bike shop is not the cheapest, they tell the customer you get what you pay for. It seems based on the mission of the bike, be it, a mountain, touring or commuter oriented bike, its all in the frame. The frame stiffness and weight is what translates the power from the human body to the mechanical means employed. It expresses percent of power and effort through frame and gearing. It too seems the components are what matter the most, between good, better and best within the context of choices and different price points in a bike shop. Its hard to appreciate the shift or brake package when you have no reference. The expression of the rider is efficiently expressed through the bike. Lastly, bikes in bike shops are competing. Competition pushes the envelope to carbon and light alloy frames, narrow tires and so forth. A Walmart bike is for the masses who may purchase a Schwinn Varsity because in 1982 they were the funk. A Walmart bike will have the name, but the components will not be up to par, the frame will not be precise, nobody will stand behind it, really. It will be shiny and tick when you move it, and then go down hill fast. You get what you pay for. A Walmart bike may be beauty, but a Bike shop cycle will be beauty and brains. This is why a Bike Shop provides a better performing cycle no matter the riders preference, for if they do not, they will be out of business. Walmart will sell you a toilet brush and eggs and keep moving.

For Italian road bikes, the Pinarello Dogma is the ultimate - with Campy Record of course.
