This is a tough question cause so many dogs have great qualities! that is bad news cause it will be so hard to decide, but good news because any dog you get will be sure to have some great attributes. hopefully your family will fall in love with your dog and put up with his/her problems too, cause all dogs have some problems (kinda like people).

I think your best bet is to think about a couple important points: how big of a dog do you want? Would you be able to brush the dog's hair often and/or vacuum the house? how active of a dog do you want? all dogs are playful sometimes, so if there will be days when you cant play a lot with your dog (or it can't play with someone else or another dog), you should think about getting one that is less energetic overall. There are good online sites with tons of information about breeds and which ones fulfill what you want (you could try http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm)

if you don't mind a mixed breed dog, go check out your local shelter. if you get a dog that is a little older and done growing, you will know exactly how big it is, how much it sheds, and it might even be all or partially housetrained, and i'm sure your parents would love that.

Do some research, go to your area ASPCA and animal shelters. There are several homeless dogs that would welcome a loving home. That is only if you are willing to give a new pet a forever home. If that's not what you have in mind, then just get a gold fish. They are very low maintenance. However if you are looking for a forever friend, don't just get the first dog you see. Visit several, get to know each of them. Get to know their personalities. Play with them. After you have done all of that, then it is time to make the final decision. Older dog or younger puppy, either will make a great pet/companion. Are you willing to train, or do you want one already trained partially. Every dog will need some sort of training no matter what the age.
As far as pure bred dogs. I have had several collies. They are usually gentle with children, friendly, and protective when needed to be. I have had 3 collies in my life and I wouldn't have changed that for anything in the world. My last collie just passed away at the age of 9. He was a very friendly, my son could lay all over him, very laid back. I got him when he was 8 weeks old. One of the best dogs I ever owned. I wish you the best of luck in what ever dog you choose.

There are many terrific breeds to own. Growing up in the Sunshine State, my family owned several dogs (Chow, Boxers, a Shepard mix and a Beagle or two). However, I am partial to the Labrador Retriever. These guys are absolutely great! I have owned two (Father/Son) and for my family, we could not have chosen a better companion. Labs are very easy to train, love to play and are very, very good with youngsters. We live on the water and he is a joy to watch jumping off the dock, swimming with the children and playing with the ducks. Additionally, we trained him with the invisible fence (now gone) and he knows his boundaries. When play time is over, he loves to snuggle with the family on the couch...the perfect pet and man's best friend.

The best dog is the one that gets trained and socialized with people at 2 and 3 months of age when it's personality is forming. At that age their mind is like a sponge soaking up everything you teach it. Get a puppy at 8 weeks and put a light collar and short rope or cord on the the puppy to drag around and be a handle so you don't have to grab for the puppy when you want to give it guidance. Don't wait to see what the puppy is going to do and wait for it to train itself; that's not gonna happen. If you haven't trained a puppy before, you don't know how, they are not furry little people. Go to training classes as soon as the vet says the puppy's shots will protect it and don't listen to anyone who tells you to wait.

i think since you have a huge backyard you should get a lab, that would be my first choice. labs are great dogs and i bet that your parents will end up falling in love with it. golden retrvs. will be my next choice, but i don't like the long hair. my third choice would be a german shepard. these three dogs are very smart and loving. they are loyal dogs i had every one of these dogs personally. if you get either of these dogs, no matter what your parents will fall in love with it.

A border collie because they are gentle and kind. Labs are very hyper and very big so if there is a little kid around the lab may jump on them and hurt them. Trust me I have one.
