I'd think you'd want to encourage as mucgh scientific research as possible, thinking you might one day actually find the proof of your god.

You are assuming a false premise.

Christians do not "fear" scientific discoveries.
This belief comes from their moral stand on some aspects of T-cell research and rejection of some of the concepts of the theory of evolution, of which many in the scientific community also have disagreement.

Science has always been man's attempts to explain and understand the things of God.

Faith of any variety (especially Islam) requires the faithful to abandon reason and rationality in order to maintain the illusions they were raised with. This is nothing new. Although I don't mean to single out Muslims for my abuse, it is worth noting that they are markedly more violent/ignorant/intolerant than any other variety of the faithfully delusional.
