Do they smell bad and have black nasty stuff in them? If so, lie him down and pour a capful of rubbing alcohol into the ear. Let it sit for a couple of minutes then use cotton to clean out the stuff. Turn to the other side and do the same thing. Do this two times a day for a few days to see if it helps. If it does then just do it once or twice a week to prevent yeast regrowth. You might need someone to help hold him down. Don't get bitten.

If this doesn't help then he might have mites instead of yeast. For mites do the same thing only with a couple of drops of flea killer topspot not alcohol. Don't use a lot of flea stuff. Just a couple of drops.

Do try the alcohol first. Yeast is the most common ear problem in dogs.

Yes, definately take a Qtip and swab to see if there is a smell. If there is nothing more than dirt smell or you see black dirt in the ears then he has ear mites. Here is a simple treatment....
First, get a qtip and dip it in some petroleum jelly do not put a lot on it. You want to go in and around the ear to moisten the dirt then do to the other ear. Wait a few minutes and keep a box of qtips next you. Start taking a clean qtip and clean the dirt out as much as you can. Keep using a clean end each time until they come out sort of clean ( no black or brown dirt) and put them in a plastic bag for disposal. Next, get a clean qtip and put a nice size portion of the petroleum jelly (got a gob but enough to get into his ear) and swab all around the canals and inside but not on the ear drum. Leave him alone. You may need to do this for 2 to 3 days in a row. After that, make sure you buy some earmite treatment and put in his ears every 4 weeks.
If it smells really bad in his ear when you check then there is an infection. Clean the ears with petroleum jelly first and clean all excess as much as possilbe. Then with a clean swab add a small dollop of triple antibiotic ointment and swab his ear with out hurting him as far as you can and all over. Keep this up for about a week and if it seems to be worse of does not clear up definately go find a vet. If cost is a problem go talk to someone at Petsmart at their vetrinary services and ask them about health insurance for your dog. It is as low as $20 a month and services can be done at the time of signing and most health check procedures are no up front costs. Hope the info helped. Keep me updated please.

Is this something that just started? I was at the Vet. today for my dog scratching his ears. They said they were seeing a lot of dogs now due to pollen allergies. Go to a pet store and get an ear cleaner and some cotton balls, never use a Q-tip, there is a danger if hurting the ear drum. Clean his ears twice a day for about a week. If that doesn't do it you will be forced to take him to the Vet. as it is probably infected. It only cost me $50.00 today for a brief visit and medication for his ears.
I hope it all works out for you and your Pit.

Get some ear cleaner at the pet store, what he really needs is a vet exam and probably medication.

He may have a mites or a yeast infection. Either way, he needs to see a vet.

Why did you get a dog if you can't afford to take care of him?
