"There is little scientific evidence that beer drinkers are more prone to abdominal obesity, despite it being known colloquially as beer belly, beer gut, or pot belly. One of the few studies conducted on the subject did not find that beer drinkers are more prone to abdominal obesity than nondrinkers or drinkers of wine or spirits." - wikipedia
Men are more prone to carrying their weight in front and they drink more beer than women do. These two points have conspired to give the illusion that beer causes bellies.
Beer contains a lot of carbohydrates but so does bread. However, bread is eaten in large quantity by most people, at least half of whom don't have beer bellies, so it isn't called a bread belly.

Think about it.... excessive carbs. Carbs not burned turn into fat. And fat collects on the belly, thus beer belly.
