Anxiety is the feeling that something is wrong or going to be wrong, that tragedy is just around the corner. Anxiety can be based/rooted in reality or just fear. Anxiety can be treated by facing the fear, or through counseling, or with the supervised use of psychotropic medications by a psychiatrist.

Depression is a severe sadness the person cannot control. It can be hormonal like post partum issues, situational like a death or divorce or loss of job, physical from an illness, or a chemical imbalance. Depression can be treated through counseling with a licensed therapist and/or through the use of mood alterating psychotropic medications that are prescribed by a psychiatrist or family doctor.

Sounds like you are in trouble and reaching out but want to know where to reach and what to tell the person. Don't worry about a lable because that is what they are. A qualified mental health professional, i.e., social worker, counselor, psychiatrict nurse, psychologist, or psychiatrist will identify the root of the problem and provide the appropriate "label" and then suggest solutions to that "label."

If your insurance covers counseling, then check with them for a list of PPO counselors. If you don't have insurance, then call the State operator and ask to be connnected to the mental health center in your area, which usually is on an ability-to-pay basis.

There is help, regardless of the label or the diagnosis.

anxiety disorder can lead to depression and vice versa - i unfortunately suffer from both, but fortunately i'm on medication that doesn't effect my lifestyle and the way i live. anxiety is when you're nervous or wound up tight... sometimes panic/anxiety attacks can come on out of the blue, and it sucks! but because someone suffers from anxiety/panic attacks, they don't think they're normal or people don't understand, etc... and as a result they get a feeling of depression; for depression its sort of the reverse. But if treated right, the anxiety disorder can be relieved through cognative behavior changes as well as medication while being closely watched (usually through your family doctor and not a shrink); and depression (if severe enough) can warrant medication (e.g. prozac), to make you feel better. Personally I don't need prozac because I find that if I don't worry about the anxiety disorder then I actually start feeling better about myself....

Actually, a big difference. I have agoraphobie, which is an anxiety disorder. I am not depressed, though. With agoraphobia it is a fear of being in public and closed in places. I'm very happy, but when I'm in a crowded place I will have a panic attack.

Both are mood disorders.

Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia), OCD, PTSD, social anxiety. Symptoms of anxiety disorders include nervousness, somatic complaints, panic attacks, etc.

Depressive disorders include dysthymia and major depression. Symptoms of depression include: excessive sadness, change in appetite (associated weight gain/loss), crying, thoughts of suicide, lethargy, sleep disturbances, cognitive disturbances, etc. Interestingly, depression frequently manifests itself as anxiety (i.e., patients with depression often c/o anxiety).

Depression you feel sad, maybe worthless, no hope. Anxiety is when everything seems overwhelming, fears become more prevelant, worrying a lot which of course can make you depressed. A lot of time they go hand in hand to one degree or another. That is why combo drugs are prescribed and developed.
