We are flying in 1 week to Cabo, Mexico from ERW with our 12 mo old son. We applied for his passport 12 weeks ago and are very stressed about not having it yet (we have called, emailed, and spoken to our DE congressman).
I did see today that they have lifted the restrictions, and you can use a state issued ID (I went today and got his ID done) AND also a US Dept Of State receipt stating that you have applied for a passport.
What receipt is this? I have the receipt from the post office where we applied. I called my post office, but they don't even know yet that the restrictions have been lifted.
Any ideas? Suggestions? I really don't want to be delayed, or miss this trip!

Go here:

And follow the directions to get your official passport receipt from the state department.

These lifting of conditions is going official today, so maybe the evening news or tomorrows paper will have the definitive answer, but i guess the receipt of the post office would be the right one, because that's the first thing that came to my mind after reading the paper.

If you have the receipt from the post office, that is probably good enough. This thing just surfaced yesterday, and I haven't yet seen anything official about it.

Its better for you to take with you to US embassy and present your office receipt that you applied for US passport. Entering USA is quite rigid hence the process is to inform US embassy of your plight. They will provide you form to fill up and wait for your call. It may be different to Mexican though.

Its my understanding that they destroy them now after issuing a new one. Your best bet is to contact them and ask what they do with old ones, and if there is anyway it could be returned. If you need to prove you were out, try things like plane receipts, bank statements or credit card statements that show out of country transactions, receipts from your travels with the date and your signature, etc.

The article you are referring to was VERY SPECIFIC as to WHAT it is and WHERE on the passport site you can get it. I don't know how much clearer they could have made the instructions... which do work because I checked them out.

THE NEWS TODAY WAS THEY [THE FEDS] WERE SUSPENDING THE DEADLINE FOR PASSPORTS AND ALL YOU NEED IS A RECEIPT FOR YOUR APPLICATION AND GOV. ID SO I IMAGINE THE SAME FOR THE STATE.
