I had to euthanize my 2 year old dog about one month ago because she was so aggressive. She was very gentle with people, but she tried to kill three different dogs. I was trying to find her a single dog home, but before I could, she bit my mom really bad. Did I do the right thing?

When I first got her, she was food aggressive, but I trained that out of her. From what I could tell, she was abused as a puppy. She only had half a tail. I train service dogs, so I can't have aggressive dogs at my house. Now I only have three dogs, but the house is much less tense with her gone.

In response to Debbie C. I know how to train a dog, I have been training service dogs for 5 years. I adopted her from a local shelter when she was about 6 months old. When I got her, she had some aggression, but I trained her out of it. But this aggression was untrainable. I talked with two behaviorists, and both said she was too aggressive, and a dangerous dog. She bit my mom so hard, it went through to the tendon. She tried to kill my Dachshund three times, and she tried to kill my other two dogs a few times as well. Look, I don't know if what I did was right, but I'm 16, I don't think I could have taken another chance with her.

Yes you did the right thing.

I just recently had to have two put to sleep because they were aggressive to people. It really sucks doesn't it. I can handle if they are dog aggressive even if they don't like cats but we can not adopt out nor can I feel safe with a dog that bites people. I was sick of having to tell people every time they came near my house or in the cute little one bites then they were scared of him and never gave him a chance. It had been six months and he was getting worse. Stand offish and the look inhis eye to bite for any reason. We did have a little time he seemed to make progress then kept biting people at petsmart.

You did the right thing. What if your dog had gotten upset and a childs face had been in the way?? You should be commended for realizing he wasn't safe and it is an animal.

Yes it is sad but you did the right thing.
We had a Lab with epilepsy- she did well for years but then the medicine didn't work anymore- she attacked me in my sleep twice- and seconds later she was as gentile as could be-just dazed. Her problem was the seizures, but even pet rescue organizations usually foster dogs to see if they are adoptable. Unfortunately, some just have agression that can't be dealt with and must be put down.
On the other hand we adopted a Rottweiler puppy that the courts removed from a house where they were training dogs to fight. She was a pup and all she wanted to do at first was to bite you. She is now 6 and a big sweet baby!!!!
It is a tough call, but you did the right thing.

Yes - I know it was a very hard decision and that it will haunt you for a long time but you did the right thing. She had moved from being dog aggressive to being people aggressive and as such you could not have found her an good home.

i work for a veterinarian. And I've seen plenty of animals euthanized for various reasons....and I tell you because of aggression is NOT that uncommon. About 6 months ago, we had to euthanize a Husky because it had bitten 3 people, the owners had to have him rabies quarantined on those 3 different occasions. And then it was to the point that they couldn't deal with it anymore. I've also seen a lady have to put down one of her dogs because it attacked and killed one of her small dogs. So don't be doubting yourself...you did the right thing. She could have gotten herself into a lot of trouble.

it is hard to say- dogs are unpredictable. i would never put a dog down unless it were ill and suffering. socializing animals is very important at an early age so that dog aggressive tendencies are kept at a minimum. i own three pit bulls so i understand the challenge. some dogs are just bred wrong and need to be trained and kept on a short leash. i got my first pit bull (already an adult and weighing 60 pounds)from a shelter and he had bitten someone for moving his food. i taught him that all food belongs to me and that he may not have it until i said. i also trained him to sit as soon as he sees another animal or small child- so that he would know the boundaries. i am sorry about your loss, and you were ultimately the one to make the decision so that has to be very hard. i hope you dont give up on having pets, there are alot of ways to deal with any bad behaivior an animal might have.

I know that having to do something like that is a very difficult choice to make.. About a year ago this month I had to do something similar as you...

Just think what if it was a child?, what if it happens to a stranger?

I feel your pain and I know that it still hurts....my fiance and I are looking into adopting from the local shelter for another compainion......

You definitely did the right thing. Something turned in this dogs head. maybe distemper or even worms that went to the brain as with our black Labrador Xabre, but something made this dog snap. without knowing the cause you could never turn the dog back.

yes i have had to also. we were in the same situation just about. i actually had to have two of my dogs put to sleep at the same time. i wasn't about to give them to someone that was going to mistreat them or who would let them hurt someone else so i did what i thought was right. it was almost two years ago and when i think about the looks of confusion on their faces, i still cry but it was the only decent, humane solution i could come up with. i was right there, loving on them until the last second. i congratulate you also for doing what was right.

That's a tough decision to make and I applaud you for doing the responsible thing. Being a pet owner is about making the hard choices when you have to and i can't think of any choices harder than the one you made. You made the right decision.

Yes you did the right thing.
Try to stop feeling so bad about it. You did the responsible thing. If the dog bit your mom it probably would have killed someone it didnt know.
