we have a dodgy fuel gauge that goes up and down (anyone know if this is the gauge or something in the fuel tank?) also our odometer has stopped working and one from a certified volvo dealer will be a couple hundred pounds. Whereas one from a scrap merchants will be a lot cheaper, but would this invalidate our volvo careline warranty (which is still going after 17 years!!!!)
Any advice on this would be much appreciated!

Cheers

if neither the speedo or odometer work, before you spend any money, inspect the connectors on the back of the panel. many times i have found loose connections here and poor grounds at various points along the center console and left and right kick panel areas. .the repair kit from ipd usa is for the 2 series not the 7 but it may be worth asking ipd about this [the part may be the same] they are very helpful and knowledgeable
as far as your warranty goes they probably will require certifiable proof of odometer change, with your "end" mileage and the "new" start mileage. and remember test don't guess- a salvor won't take back an electrical item that you find you don't need. good luck

If you want to save a little time money temporarily and you know you have at least 5 gallons in the gas tank, try slapping on the top of the dashboard a couple of times just above the fuel gauge. And if the gauge reads like it should, then you can continue slapping the dashboard until your fed up with it. But if want to replace it there are 2 screws on each corner near the bottom of the instrument cluster. Remove the rectangular covers to reveal the screws. Wait!! Disconnect the negative battery cable first to prevent any sparks or damage to your entire instrument cluster. Once the screws are removed slide the cluster forward slowly until your hands can reach behind it. Disconnect all connectors and wires and making note of where it goes. The connector for the speedo unit may have an plastic gadget that needs to be carefully pryed off. You use a small screw driver to pry it off. Once everything is disconnected from the back of the cluster pull it forward and slide it to the right side. Place the cluster on a clean work table. Flip the cluster face down and you'll see all the cute little screws.until it splits the cluster in half. Remove the screws that hold the gauge from the circuit board. Installation is reverse.

Replacing the whole assembly is the easiest. repairing the odometer is a little tricky. There is a website in Seattle , Washington, That sells a repair kit. IPD Volvo. R & R of speedo is easy . Where the knob that resets the odometer gose into the speedo There is a small plastic cover that just pops off. under it is a screw. Same cover and same screw on the other side. Remove those two screws and the unit slides out . 4 plugs and a couple of other conections and it's out. Note where the odd conections go,They vary by equipment and there are extra terminals. Try tightening the two small nuts that hold the gauges to the printed circut board. I've fixed a number of temp/gas gauge problems doing that. Good luck.

The fuel guage sounds like it may be a loose wire. My speedometer starts out every trip asleep, and after a few bumps - "BAM!" - it wakes up all of a sudden. This is also a loose wire. The problem... is finding the loose wire.

Could be the same thing with the odometer.

Good luck with the Volvo! They're great cars. I love mine!
