The "official" punishment is 100 lashes (not death), but that's only if you get caught. However I think it's worse to know that God knows everything you reveal and He knows everything you conceal. It's easy to do something that you don't think you'll get caught doing, but is it really worth it to risk your personal relationship with God? If you can't control your sexual desires long enough until you get married, how weak will you be in other aspects of your religious life?

It's practiced in the middle east where they actually believe in the "literal truth" of the Quran, but in America (where people don't usually believe as much as they say they do) it doesn't really come up.
Oh an American muslim family may disown a relative who has sex before marriage, may chastise, harass and punish severely, but they'll usually stop short of murder.

NO not death!if they were not married.
behold! Islam does not wait for the problem to occur then start finding solutions for it!
women must not were tightened and short cloths in away that makes man thinking of sex and how to make relationship with her.
the Islamic governments are obliged to help singles to get married to satisfy their physical and emotional needs.
men and women are not supposed to make relationships and make dates before marriage..
a man and woman are not supposed to upset each other in their emotions out of marriage.
if all these rules are fulfilled then having sex before marriage has to be punished.
the punishment of the two having sex before marriage is to be whipped 100 lashes.
so others will fear to do the same thing.

I'm muslim and i can say that stoning to death or such are more of a "tradition" than religion. Some mollahs in undeveloped countries try to reflect things the way that fits their benefits that's all.
