Theres no way you train your face to take blows, although if you start boxing at an early age your face hardens through time, but some people have a natural stone-like skin like Ali who never got cut etc, I remember lads in the gym hitting their face off a punchbag, they maintained it did it for them,

I think Steve above me has a point.

However, in a prolonged fight, the chances of not being hit in the face are slim.

Unless it's a knockout blow (rare in a street fight), the main worry with a face punch is broken bones, like nose/cheek/jaw etc, bruising, and the shock of it happening.

Boxing with a face guard will help you deal with the shock and keep your wits about you, bruising will happen, full stop, but broken bones can be helped by strengthening your facial muscles, like any other muscle.

All round body strength will also help to keep you on your feet, very important to prevent kicks and stamps to the face when on the floor.

My suggestion?

Duck and hit the attacker in the kidneys (side of body), or sternum (middle of chest).

We have God to thank for the fact that most attackers go for the head, a small target.

Buy a bag to hang from the ceiling and learn how to body punch hard.

AND DUCK!!

Theres no way to 'train' to take a hit to the face. Either ur face or better yet U can take it or it cant. All the boxing with friends, weaving ,bobbing and playing around wont make ur face like granite. U really wont know until someone clocks u if u can take a punch. I would'nt suggest picking fights or hitting urself u will just have to find out 1 day.

Getting hit with a glove is nothing like getting hit with a fist. The damage you can suffer (and your experience of, or reaction to, the damage) is very different.

There are two main effects: local impact trauma and inertia trauma ('whiplash').

In a fight, you will cut much more easily than in the boxing ring, especially if the attacker wears jewellery or uses some kind of equipment (knuckleduster, chain, etc). You can't really 'train' the reaction you'll have when the impact happens, but if you've ever had a serious 'broken-skin' accident, you'll be able to assess how you react to this kind of damage.

The inertia trauma is what makes you unable to fight back, or to do so effectively. Your head is affected by the physical transfer of force, so that (for example) the balance organ in your ear becomes confused for a short time. this also happens on fairground rides like roller-coasters and gyroscopes, so plenty of experience on these can help you to regain your bearings more quickly.

Other inertial reactions will also be helped by this kind of 'disorientation training', BUT only partially. The kind of inertial force you can potentially receive from a punch is much more severe than the jiggling about you get in a roller-coaster. It can cause brain damage, and certainly will if it is repeated enough times. So comparable 'training' loads might help you cope in a fight, but injure you before a fight happens.

A different strategy is to try to lessen the effects of any blow that you do receive, and the usual way to do this is by strengthening your neck. A strong neck will act as a 'damper' when you are hit, by allowing your head to move back more gradually from the impact, and by controlling the rebound instead of letting your head just 'bounce' back into place.

You need to be careful about training your neck; not only because it is easy to overdo the loads and damage it, but also because a 'musclebound' neck will increase your chances of being damaged instead of reducing them.

Unfortunately there's no easy way. Best way is to join a boxing gym. When you get hit the first time your whole body just seizes up cos it doesn't know what's happening. Eventually you get conditioned to keep fighting although I can't lie and tell you it's hurts any less. Take the advice of other answerers and avoid trouble if you can, it's a lot easier!

The object is not to get hit. Learn to keep your head moving and to duck quickly when a punch is coming, that's your best bet.

Duck your head to get hit in the top of the head. If you get hit in the jaw you'll drop like a fly. protect the jaw and swing for his.
