cleanliness was next to godliness? No soap, no toothpaste, no toilet paper or other sanitary stuff. You read about them washing their feet a lot but that was because they wore sandals and the streets were muddy or dusty and some did that before going into their homes or temple. I suspect that the personal hygiene of Jesus and the people of his era would be considered quite gross compared to the standards of today.

Jesus and his folowers were on the road all the time so they went to the local university and used the shower in the gym.

People are always imaginative wherever they are in any different situations and circumstances in their lives. The soap, the toilet papers and other sanitary stuff were just invented as comfortable means to maintain their cleanliness not as cleanliness was invented after those items.
Which would only mean they have their own way of using what was available at that time...water, herbs, leaves and twigs. They have unpolluted running waters from rivers, brooks and streams which they used for bathing and they were able to dig wells for drinking and washing parts of their bodies that gets dirty. The kind of clothes they were wearing at the early times does not require them to take a bath everyday and so they only washed ritually everyday whatever is the part that needs to be washed. There was no pollution like what we have now that makes our skin dirty even in just a day outside..

There is something in the bible called the Song of Solomon. In it there is a bit about a - bag of myrrh between her breasts. There have been 10,000 interpretations of that, but in reality it was something they used to overcome the smell of their bodies. Queen Victoria said she would have 3 baths in her life. The day she was born, the day she got married and the day she died. It is surprizing that anyone ever had sex. Who could get close to each other. It was on the books until the 1950's but it was illegal to have a bath more than once a week in Boston.

I am pretty sure they cleaned themselves. Just because their wasn't running water or toiletries doesn't mean they were dirty. In China they used to use salt and their fingers to brush their teeth. Ever hear of mint, it is a nice breath freshener. They used to use certain berries and juices in their water when they bathed. Don't be soo silly to think thet they were not clean. It would probably be like now. The poor probably were less unkempt and the rich were probably very kempt. They would still have had class systems and hygiene was probably a clue to which class system you were in.

I think people had heard about bathing long before Jesus came along, they probably had heard of the Medditeranian Sea even. In the new testament it says that men could get there fore-skins sewed back on, so it was pretty modern in the First Century. Time for your diaper change yet?

They bathed in large bodies of water like lakes and rivers and used special herbs and spices to stay fresh. As in they rubbed it on them to smell nice. Also they used different oils to combat dirt.

As for toilet paper, they either used cloth, or their hand, whichever was convienent
