You don't need the passport to come into Canada, you need it to go back to the US. Your green card may allow you to be in the US but it does not allow you to go to the US.

You need a passport to fly international flights, even US/Canada. And if you don't have one, it takes a lot of time to get one. You can drive across the border without one.

Unless you are really lucky, the airlines and/or security from USA will not even let you on the plane if you do not have a passport at this point.
