More than likely its the food. Cheap dog foods like Iams or Pedigree or even brands that claim to be "higher quality" like Eukanuba are filled with corn. Corn is not good for dogs, its like feeding junk food to you dog. The best things to look for in dog foods are ingredients like, rice, oats, chicken or beef meal...not chicken by-products (big difference), flaxseed oil, or salmon oil, potato, mixed veggies, etc.

Things to watch out for...Ground corn, corn meal, corn gluten, chicken by-product.

Not only will you notice that your dog will smell way way better, but his coat will become less oily. Also, your dog will shed less, his poop will be smaller, his eyes will be brighter, he will have more energy, he will eat less of a higher quality dog food.

Brands to look at....Pinnacle (made by Breeders Choice), Nutro, Timberwolf. All very high quality. More expensive yes, but your dog will eat less of the good stuff because he is getting what he needs from less, so the higher cost is only minimal at best.

My dog stunk up my house when I first brought him home, I switched him from Eukanuba, to Pinnacle....two weeks later...he was cured. I only have to bathe him once or twice a year (when he gets really muddy). Dogs should not be bathed very much, it depletes the oil in their skin.

Oh, one more thing, if you do try a high quality brand and your dog turns his nose up to it and wont eat it, mix in a spoon full of plain yogurt...he will love it, and yogurt is good for them.

Good luck in whatever you do...

p.s. the soap i use is called Perfect Pet-Oatmeal Shampoo..I give it an A+ and I bought it at Petsmart.

Golden Retrievers are notorious for having hypothyroidism. This can give them a nasty smell that will not go away, no matter how much you bathe them.

First, switch your dog to a grain free food. This will help with immune function, and then I'd get your dog to the vet for a full thyroid panel. This will tell you if your dog has a thryoid problem.

Good luck.

It could be their food, have you changed it lately? If you have always had this problem you could need to change their food.If they fart or smell like poo, it's the food. On the bath part I found a wonderful shampoo from Dr's. Foster and Smith it is the Premier shampoo, cheaper then the stuff from the vet and Petsmart. I have three sheltie and this is really nice on their fur and they smell great for about two weeks and the next two weeks before their next bath no sweet smell but no oder either.

It starts with food! If your dog food has more then 2 grains listed in the first 5 ingredients, this would be your problem. Buy your dog the best food money can buy. Raw feeding is the cure all for smelly dogs. I have 6 Danes living in the house and you can not tell a dog lives here by smell.
Put garbage into your dog, get garbage out of him! Change the food!

I don't know why she still smells bad, but I want to recommend a company called Indigo Wild. They make a dog soap and spray called Yum. It smells so good and is so natural you can use it yourself. Also comes in a soy candle.

First, take him to the vets to make sure he doesn't have some kind of medical problem - skin condition, ear infection etc.

While you're there, discuss food, grooming, anal glands, allergies, etc.. Your dog's odor may be a result of any or a combination of one or more of these variables.

Finally, some dogs just smell. Goldens are especially "doggy" smelling, especially after they mature.

But check to make sure he's not harboring some kind of infection first.

You might try putting baking soda in her coat just like you would flea powder then brushing it out. And when you do give her a bath, rinse with vinegar.
