Nope but religious people are no smarter then Atheist either. (I'm an Atheist)

I don't think being an atheist or religious defines how smart you are. That's like asking who is smarter a white person or a black person. The only difference between an atheist and someone religious is what they believe to be true about God. But that's not much different then what a democrat believes about the war versus a republican. It's not a matter of intelligence, it's a matter of what they were taught and the experiences that have shaped who they are.

I'm a Christian and I don't consider myself smarter or dumber than an atheist, I just believe I've found the truth about God, while respecting what the atheist truth about God is. I feel I'm right, but that's a belief, just like believing there is no God is a belief.

I don't know if I'd use the word "smarter," but I would say that most Atheists I've known were more analytical thinkers. If someone makes a flawed argument to them, they don't distrust their own minds' ability to see the flaws.

I think sometimes religious people come off as less smart because they are so afraid to question anything. If their brain kicks in with a question that might endanger the absolute certainty of their faith, they see that as evil trying to overtake them and they dismiss those thoughts.

I know VERY intelligent religious people. They just don't allow their minds to engage on anything that might lead to doubt. Which I think is crazy! If good can't exist without evil, why should faith exist without doubt?

Another bad generalization.

But it seems to make many Atheists feel better, and I guess that is what counts to them.

Peace!

P.S. does more education necessarily mean smarter? I know people that went through 10 years of College and yet are not smart enough to balance their own check books, and people that have no College that can design and build complex structures.

Odd to see an Atheist man in a pink leotard saying that he is smarter because he is an Atheist.

There are atheists who are smarter than religious people, and there are religious people who are smarter than atheists.

If you are interested in 'smart' people, search the internet/books and find out what 'smart' and scientific people like Stephen Hawking and Einstein have to say about the idea of a God - and be surprised, if you are an Atheist.

Well let me put it this way...there are more Atheist scientists than Christian scientists. But, I wouldn't Atheists are automatically smarter than Theists. Some Theists are smart some Atheists are smart. Everyone is different.

I do not believe that a person's faith or religion or lack of one determines how intelligent they are.
Many people of differing belief systems have PHD's, are Lawyers, Doctors, Scientists etc etc

People of different beliefs get good grades and bad grades, some are smarter then others. I really see no correlation between the two.

Addition: I would really like to see these so called statistics...I find it funny because you can usually find a statistic to support any claim.

As people, neither group is necessarily smarter. But in terms of the principle beliefs, then yes, atheists are. Since we all use logic in our lives in most of the things we do, it is silly to reject it in a few cases out of convenience for our baseless beliefs. Logic and reason are how the universe seems to work, so atheists naturally do not believe.

If you mean REAL atheism as in people who completely reject any idea of God as a possibility, then they are almost as ignorant as the religious ones. Perhaps even equally so.

Not necessarily, because I know a lot of smart religious people - but have yet to meet a dumb atheist. In general, studies have shown that the more education you have, the less likely you are to be religious. But that of course does not apply to every single person.
