I have three incisions (2 tiny, and one about 2 inches long) on my knee. I am getting hives from not being able to clean it all off. All around the knee I have scrubbed and scrubbed as hard as I could; but there is still some there, as well as right around the incisions (which still have stitches). How do I remove the antiseptic? These hives are driving me crazy and I'd rather not keep taking Benadryl.

First off don't scrub anymore? That will cause more irritation. I would suggest using hydrogen poroxide. Followed a few minutes later with iodine. Iodine is a very good wound complication prevention measure. If your really tough pour some rubbing alcohol or vodca on the incision...but that's going to hurt a bit. Iodine can cause some pain...but any pain caused is just from the peroxide or iodine reacting with the infected area. Then probably put some neo-sporin and cover the incision with a band aid for a day or two. You can repeat this procedure a few times if the incision starts to get funky again.

Did they tell you to keep the stitches dry? Most of the time if they didn't they used a non-dissolvable stitch and you can wash it with dial soap and water around the area. The alcohol pads aren't a bad idea either. If you're not sure you can call the MD office and a nurse can tell you wound care instructions

Just a thought...do you have hives all over your body? Or just at the surgical site...are you taking antibiotics (as a source of the hives?)...is there a dressing with tape? (many people have a tape allergy also)

washing the incision site won't hut anything. just make sure you're not scrubbing it so hard that you burst open that stitch! the betadine antispetic comes off fairly easily with that purell stuff- you know that "waterless" antibacterial handwashing stuff?

I am recovering from knee surgery (acl reconstruction). I had no problem after my steri strips fell off using a wash cloth with some mild antibacterial soap on it. It came off with no problems. good luck

You could try isopropyl alcohol swabs. Also called prep pads.
