Hello
This question is so very hard to answer, because the best thing you can say to someone has to represent a truth about them, and every person is different.
If there was one word which suited everyone, then it would seem commonplace, like the word Hello, which to me is a lovely word, but not what you mean.
We also have to consider what that person is to us, in the example you gave he was a boyfriend, what he said wouldn't have been so powerful if her doctor had said it.
These are the words that come to mind, but they can't apply to everyone.
Trustworthy, dependable, reliable,
Considerate,
clever, intelligent
I could go on, but I think you understand, I was seeking a magic word which could make anyone feel good, provided it could be accepted, and had an element of truth, and what I came up with was simply
'you are magic.'

The other day, a gave some advice to a young woman, and with tears in her eyes, she said, you remind me of my mother.
That was a huge compliment, I cried.
Around January of this year.
My husband at the 11:30 one night, at the end of a 70 hour work week...laid down in bed with our children between us and said, "This is the best part of my day. Being with the love of my life and our best production yet! It means all is "right" in the world tonight" Oh I cried and he kissed my head and we all curled up to go to sleep.
To date- that is the most wonderful thing I have ever felt or heard. May you blessed to hear such things..... total love.

Recently, I ran into my ex-boyfriend while I was grocery shopping this week. We talked about what has been going with our lives and how are lives changes after we broke up four years ago. He was telling me about the girls he was dating and how they do not match up to the qualities I have. I told my ex-boyfriend that it takes time to find the right person. I also mentioned to him that he cannot find Mrs.right in these clubs and parties he attends with his friends.
He agreed with my opinion but what he said after I would never forget and it went like this. He told me I was like a diamond in the rough and he will never find on one with my qualities. Someone who is very sweet, hardworking and loving person. You're not a person to pick arguments, flirt around other guys, nasty nor lazy. In the back of my mind I was thinking what kind of women he's been dating?! But, I was very surprised by what he said, also I was grateful that he notice those qualities I have.

A friend of mine has gone thru a very bad divorce and I've been with her thru thick and thin because frankly she's too upset to think straight. After a month or so, she said that without me by her side, hearing about my own truth to god awful divorce and how my ex has treated me and yet i managed to be what I am today, a confident, compassionate woman having to take care of child whose abroad yet stil be able to laugh at myself am not letting myself be bitter. I'm touched because I went thru all the bad things alone and to be able to help her when she's in need and showing her that she could survire and her appreciation touches me. How I wish I have someone like ME to help me thru the worst. But being appreciated and loved is a blessing.

Definitely 'I love you' if you mean it. Love means that you know all about the persons flaws and strengths and accept them as they are and that is the nicest thing that you could be told.
But 'alive' sounds good to me. Life is a precious thing. It also sounds like he really thought about it.

I think it's pretty cool when someone can honestly say that you've made a difference in their life and they'll never forget you. Something along those lines. Cliche`, I know, but if someone sincerely says that to you, it's awesome.

A woman once told me that she could tell that I was a Christian even before I told her I go to church. That to me was a great compliment.

Back when I was a young, unmarried, triathlete, I was told by a random stranger that I had an innate, natural. physical beauty. Man, that made me feel great.
