Sarah McLachlan. She has an unbelievably beautiful voice, whether on albums or live (I've seen her several times) and her songwriting and lyrical skills are awesome as well. I don't like all of her songs, since some of them are a bit repetitive. But the best material from Fumbling Towards Ecstasy and Surfacing are some of the best songs I've ever heard. Mirror Ball has some truly great performances on it of these songs.
When I listen to her sing, I notice the incredible and natural sonority of her voice, but also her sense of control and phrasing. She is amazing at adding subtle inflections to add depth to the lines. Just thinking of some of her live performances gives me chills.

Bernadette Peters. She has the longest list of credits to her name and she has done film, stage, and television. She is probably the most recognized and respected name in recent Broadway history and for good reason. She has an amazing voice that no one can compare to. She amazes me.

Whitney Houston, before the drugs. She had an amazing and beautiful voice. Now, I'd say Yolanda Adams. She also has an amazing voice.
