Probably the most common cause if vasovagal syncope. (Syncope means fainting). Various deep emotional stimuli such as fright, sudden sorrow, etc, send stimuli from the brain via the vagus nerve. These stimuli can slow the heartbeat and decrease the tone in the thin muscle layer of the small arterioles, resulting in a sudden lowering of blood pressure and decreased blood supply to the brain, causing one to faint. The body's regulatory mechanisms, termed homeostasis, kick in to speed up the heart and increase the BP, so the affected person usually regains consciousness rapidly.
Another major cause of fainting is low blood sugar which reduces the energy source the brain needs to function. Again, homeostasis usually kicks in to increase the blood sugar, but this type of syncope can be more serious.
Blood flow to the brain is aided by keeping the person flat on his or her back, elevating the feet, and applying gentle pressure to the abdomen.
If the blood cannot deliver sugar and oxygen to the brain for more than a few minutes, yes, permanent damage may occur. Fortunately, most fainting episodes are not this serious, but may indicate some bodily malfunction, and the person should seriously consider seeking medical attention.

Pain or extreme stress can cause a vagal reaction which causes the blood pressure to drop. In brief episodes like on the videos, the only harm is if they fall on something harmful. The faint rarely lasts more than a few seconds. If it lasts longer than that, medical help would be needed.
